Evans jnr aims for podium in Welsh finale to Fiesta Sporting Trophy
Rising Welsh rally driver Elfyn Evans is hoping to finish his first season in top flight rallying with a podium place on his home event as the Fiesta Sporting Trophy reaches its finale with action in Wales this weekend.
Based in Oswestry, the Bulldog Rally takes in four high speed stages in mid-Wales with service halts in Elfyn’s home town of Dolgellau. The Fiestas run in the clubman version of the Bulldog Rally with action throughout the day on Saturday October 20.
The rally comes hot on the heels of the Colin McRae Forest Stages where Elfyn recorded his best result of the season – second overall in The Sun Virgin Money Fiesta.
And with third place in the championship now secure Elfyn and co-driver Richard Edwards are looking forward to finishing the season with another podium finish.
“This year the aim has been to get the car home in one piece on every event and build up experience in the car,’’ said Elfyn who has only had one non-finish this season, after crashing out of action on the second round in Kielder.
“To finish third overall is way beyond our expectations but we are aware that we want to maintain our finishing record on this last event.’’
And he said finishing the championship with a round so close to home will be a great way to end the championship. “Hopefully there will be plenty of support in the forests from friends and family and I’m really looking forward to tackling some classic Welsh rally stages,’’ he said.
Action gets underway in Oswestry early on Saturday morning with the awards back in the town after the four high speed stages which cover around 45 competitive miles.
In addition to The Sun and Virigin Money, Elfyn is also backed by Mile End Service Station, Garwood Motorsport Services, Trawsdir Caravan and Camping Park and the Trefeddian Hotel at Aberdyfi. The car has been built and prepared by Gwyndaf Evans in Dolgellau.
