Sutton celebrates Carrera title

James Sutton hopes that winning the 2007 Porsche Carrera Cup GB title will help him graduate into the Porsche Supercup for 2008, following in the wheeltracks of former Carrera Cup champions Richard Westbrook and Damien Faulkner.Sutton clinched the title in a dramatic conclusion to the season at Thruxton over the weekend (13/14 October), when just six points covered the top three drivers after 20 races. Tim Harvey finished second and Steven Kane third in a superbly competitive season. "It's an amazing feeling; absolutely fantastic," said Sutton. "I've spent the last six weeks thinking 'what if', so I don’t think it's really sunk in yet."Sutton secured his victory with third place in the final round, having started the race seventh on the grid. "That was probably the longest race of my life," he said. "I got into a position after five or six laps where I knew I could win, and then it just seemed to go on and on and on! The laps took so long to come down," he admitted."Darren, my engineer, and I had worked out a pit board system of letting me know where I was and so I knew what I had to do. So I had a clear idea of the situation I was in, but it just took forever."Now Sutton can celebrate the most important result of his career to date and paid tribute to the opportunity that moving to the Carrera Cup has given him. "We came into Carrera Cup this year and all of a sudden my career has moved at a million miles an hour. So many opportunities have opened up for us because of the results we’ve got. If I’d plugged away at another season in single-seaters, I wouldn’t have got a tenth of what I’ve got now. It’s been the best career move I’ve ever made and the Carrera Cup has been the best springboard that I could imagine."Although no firm plans are yet in place for Sutton in 2008, he sampled the Porsche Supercup when he contested the British Grand Prix race at Silverstone in July and is keen to make a permanent graduation into the F1 support race series.
