Lancaster makes it a hat-trick

Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, - Barcelone – Race 1

By taking his third victory in a row in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, Jon Lancaster (SG Formula) has moved that little bit closer to taking the runner-up spot in the Championship. In second, Jaime Alguersuari (Epsilon Red Bull) takes his first podium spot of the season in front of his home crowd. Charles Pic (SG Formula) took third to practically guarantee a top three finish overall. Jon Lancaster got off to the best start and overtook Brendon Hartley (Epsilon Red Bull) on the brakes into the first bend. In the main field, things were more chaotic: Jules Bianchi (SG Formula) and Pablo Montilla (Epsilon Euskadi) both came unstuck in the opening stages.

Lancaster completed lap one ahead of Coletti (Epsilon Red Bull), Alguersuari, Pic, Hartley, Marsoin (SG Formula), Marinescu (District Racing), Hegewald (Motopark Academy), Mäki (Epsilon Red Bull) and Panciatici (Boutsen Energy Racing).

Stefano Coletti then span before even completing lap one, letting Alguersuari, Pic and Hartley all through. It was then down to the man from Monaco to contain both Marsoin and Marinescu and he wasn't finding it easy. The Romanian took full advantage of the struggle to get past the Frenchman.

With five laps gone, Mika Mäki was now only in 10th after having been passed by both Nelson Panciatici and Frank Kechele (Motopark Academy).

Marinescu and Marsoin finally managed to get past Coletti on lap six. At the front, Jon Lancaster had already put together a two-and-a-half second lead over Jaime Alguersuari. Marinescu wasn't able to hold onto his position for long and soon fell back to ninth. Mika Mäki was then forced into the pits to retire – but not before setting the fastest race lap. Oliver Turvey (Jenzer Motorsport) took over 10th place as a result.

With two laps left, Kechele passed Panciatici to go into seventh. It was the last notable incident of a race which gave Jon Lancaster his fourth win of the season.

Jon Lancaster: "This season has been really crazy. I wasn't able to score any points in any of the opening races and now I'm taking one win after another! Tomorrow I'll be starting from pole position so I'm going to try and continue the run with a fifth victory. Finishing runner-up would be a superb result for me and the entire team."

Jaime Alguersuari: "It was an enjoyable race. Jon set a good pace and was attacking hard. I tried to stay with him over the opening laps. Then I realized I wasn't going to do any better so I decided to make sure of second place. It's good to finish the season in this way, especially in Barcelona."

Charles Pic: "I got a very good start, which meant I managed to come through the opening bend in fourth place. We got past Stefano when he made his error. Then we were all bunched up very close to each other and it was difficult to pass. This third place is a good result in terms of the Championship standings."
