Lancaster-a fine end to the season

Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, - Barcelona – Race 2

By taking his fifth victory in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, Jon Lancaster (SG Formula) has made sure of taking the Championship runner-up spot to Brendon Hartley (Epsilon Red Bull). In a re-run of yesterday, the podium was completed by Jaime Alguersuari (Epsilon Red Bull) and Charles Pic (SG Formula). This also means that Pic will make it onto the podium in the final Eurocup standings.

Jon Lancaster and Jaime Alguersuari went into the opening bend side-by-side. Despite the Catalonian's best efforts to throw him off balance, the Englishman was not about to be intimidated and turned in first. Charles Pic, who also made an excellent start, exited the opening bend in third ahead of Stefano Coletti (Epsilon Red Bull) and Brendon Hartley, who had definitely come off worse from the start. These five were followed by Mika Mäki (Epsilon Red Bull), Roberto Merhi (Jenzer Motorsport), Mihai Marinescu (District Racing), Alexandre Marsoin (SG Formula) and Frank Kechele (Motopark Academy).

In the main field, things were on the point of boiling over: all the young hopefuls out there were clearly looking to end their season on a high note! Roberto Merhi took advantage of the battle between Coletti, Hartley and Mäki to slip up into sixth place. But the Finn was not giving up that easily and reaffirmed his superiority on lap three.

With five laps gone, Lancaster seemed to have built up an unassailable lead over his rivals. The young English driver also took the point available for the fastest race lap at the end of lap three.

In contrast, the battle between Coletti, Hartley and Mäki was far from over. After having been stripped of ninth position by Frank Kechele, Alexandre Marsoin then came under pressure from Jules Bianchi.

We had to wait until lap 11 to see the next change in the top ten, when Jules Bianchi (SG Formula) finally managed to get past his teammate Alexandre Marsoin.

Mihai Marinescu was having a difficult end to the race: The Romanian was passed by Frank Kechele and Jules Bianchi in quick succession. But this was not going to be enough to enable Kechele to hold onto his place in the top five overall: he finishes equal on points with Alguersuari, who is placed higher up the order because of a larger number of second place finishes.

Jon Lancaster: "If there'd been a few races more, I might have won the championship! The work that we put in with the team has really paid off and I know that I can be satisfied to finish in second overall. My best memory of the season still has to be Donington. It was fantastic to win at home."

Jaime Alguersuari: "This brings a very good weekend for me to a close. I'm really happy to dedicate this second podium finish to my family and all the friends that have come to the circuit to cheer me on. These two podium spots enable me to finish in the top five in the Championship."

Charles Pic: "I got off to a very good start, which meant I managed to come through the opening bend in third behind Jaime. I wasn't able to get past him and then he dropped me midway through the race. But I held onto my position to take another good result for the team. I'm happy to finish on the Eurocup podium in my first ever season in Formula Renault."
