Burtenshaw wins Legends title

Burtenshaw wins Legends World Semi Pro Title at Sears PointPeter Morton retains World Points CrownSussex racer Glenn Burtnenshaw has seen off the best drivers in the world of Legends Carsa racing to win the Semi Professional drivers’ World Title at Infineon Raceway (nee Sears Point) this weekend. The annual World Championship pitches drivers from all the American States that host Legends racing along with drivers from Canada, Scandinavia and Europe. The win was remarkable as Burtenshaw, 42 from Forest Row, had never raced on the undulating 12 turn 2.5 mile road course which is situated just north of San Francisco.  He was also in an unfamiliar car as he had hired one from a local team for the event.  Conditions were dry for the qualifying session and heat on Friday.  Burtenshaw qualified in fourth place for the heat and held station in the race to secure fifth place on the aggregated grid for the World Championship race itself.  Finals day saw a change in the weather with some rain which was probably bad news for the Americans but good news for the English racers who have had plenty of experience in wet conditions at home this year.   Glenn was clearly getting to grips with the circuit despite being hampered by the antics of Californian driver Brian Kamisky who made contact with the rear of Burtenshaw’s car whilst he was challenging for the lead.   Ultimately he fought off all the challenges to become the first English driver ever to win the Semi Pro title. In the Masters Division Peter Morton took third place in the World Championship race and his points score means that he has won the world Legends points title.  In effect that means he has been the most consistently successful driver throughout the 2007 season.A third English driver, Robin Webb, was also competing in the Masters division and, as he does in the regular season in the UK, started his races from the back of the field.  Robin was also on his first visit to the World finals and made it into the top thirty of the final from an entry of over fifty drivers in the class.“I am thrilled for both Glenn and Peter,” says Legends boss Phil Cooper.  “They are both great ambassadors for our racing – here and abroad.  It means that we will have two world champions for the UK fans to cheer on next season.”As well as the individual World Titles the European/Scandinavian team also beat their American hosts to win the fifth running of the Transatlantic Trophy.  This is the fourth time that the visiting team have won the trophy – this year’s team including drivers from England, Finland and Spain.
