Ginetta G50 Cup heads to Thruxton

The Michelin Ginetta G50 Cup is set to thrill fans at Thruxton this weekend for three races in the ultra-competitive championship.

With Carl Breeze taking a maiden win (backed up by a second victory a day later) at Brands Hatch, and former karting star Frank Wrathall bagging honours, too, the season looks set to be very competitive.

Breeze, a regular in the TOCA paddock after spells in Formula Renault, SEATs and the BTCC itself, benefitted from a duff start by pole-sitter Wrathall in race one (the shortest of the three in Kent) to take an immediate advantage. He was never able to shake off Wrathall, however, as the son of motorcycle engine tuner extraordinaire Frank Wrathall snr chased him every inch of the way. A lap from home, Breeze made a slight error at Graham Hill Bend and lost momentum, but Frank was unable to get the drag alongside him. When Wrathall had a similar moment on the final tour, the result was sealed for Breeze.

Nathan Freke, the 2006 UK Formula Ford Champion, was Breeze’s main opposition in race two and won – on the road at least. His robust method of overtaking Carl went down like a lead balloon in race control and Nathan copped a time penalty that dropped him down to third giving Wrathall the win from Breeze. After all the drama of the weekend, Breeze had the luxury of an easier time in race three and stormed into the distance, whilst Freke and Wrathall argued over second place, the two cars tied together for the duration of the race. Contact was avoided and Freke got the nod for second place.

Expect the fight to be between these three this weekend and with three points-scoring opportunities, the fight will be intense. Others that should be up front include the Toms, Sharp and Dunstan; Speedworks boss Christian Dick should be on the pace – he took a sixth at Brands – whilst Speedworks customer Richard Sykes should be worth watching, buoyed by two sterling drives at Oulton Park at Easter in the British GT Championship where he netted the Driver of the Weekend award.

Qualifying for the two races takes place on Saturday April 25th, with race one starting at 15:55 over 11 laps. Race two will be on Sunday April 26th at 10:45 over the longer 16 lap duration, as will race three starting at 16:00.
