McNally Claims first V8 Ute win, while Elsegood takes Winton Round
Coopers Pale Ale Racer, Jack “The Hustler” Elsegood claimed Round Two and a Race Three win in what turned into a nail-biting finish to Round Two of the Yokohama V8 Ute Series at Winton Raceway, Sunday, 4th May.
Elsegood, who is now coming second in the Series by just one point out paced Maxibon Racings, Layton Crambrook who was chasing him down the whole race from his 2nd position start.
Crambrook claimed second overall for the round from current series leader Gary Baxter who claimed third overall, hot on his tail.
Johnson overtook Harris early in the race although the young Gold Coaster got off to a great start beating Baxter off the line from fourth position, however his Global Trading Schools Holden slowed with engine overheating pushing him back to 22nd for Race Three and to 4th place overall in the Series equal with Kim Jane.
Jane started Race Three in 10th position but managed to push his way through the field to end the race in 5th position after an entertaining battle with Yanis Derums, George Miedecke and Stephen Robinson.
At one point in the race all four cars were neck and neck going down the straight, Jane coming out on top followed by Derums and Miedecke.
2008 Rookie of the Year Glenn McNally came in eighth place and was on a high coming off his first win for the Series in Race Two earlier in the day.
“This is my first win in the Utes and is a great feeling. I just went out hard at the start and focused on the finish line,” said McNally. Tusker Beer’s Stephen Robinson was unlucky to hit a ripple strip on lap nine dropping him back to 10th position for Race Three however he put in a consistent performance in all 3 races over the weekend.RED Express Racings, Charlie Kovacs took advantage of the situation and after a solid 3rd place in Race Two ended the weekend 8th overall in the Championship.
Brad “Packers” Patton had one of his best weekends to date and raced well to finish in 11th position in Race Three.
Following closely behind Patton was another battle between 2009 Rookies, Paul Williams and Gary Carson.
Carson proved that he is a force to be reckoned with and beat Williams to the chequer flag but it wasn’t enough to catch the Western Australian on the Rookie leader board.
BVC Racings, Robert “Captain” Jarvis was cheered on by former teammate and Golden Guitar award winning country singer Adam Brand resulting in a great weekend holding fourth position in Race Two one of his best race results since joining the series.
Andrew Fisher and George Elliot were unlucky not to finish Race Two and had to watch from the sidelines for Race Three following engine problems along withiseek Racings, Jason Gomersall.
Local Numurkah driver, Ray Sidebottom was unable to put the Flo Holden over the line in the final race due to continued suspension issues and Workhorse Collisions driver, Michael Kavich was unlucky not to finish the race after losing his rear bumper and getting called into pits on the final lap after contact with Peter Burnitt earlier in the race.Baxter continues to lead the series for Holden from Elsegood, Miedecke, Kim Jane, Ryall Harris and Glenn McNally.
