British Speedway Weekly Round Up

BIG EVENT LATEST... BRITISH Speedway Chairman Peter Toogood has labelled this year's Super7even series a massive success. Toogood was on hand to present the Elite League Best Pairs trophy to Poole after their dramatic win at Eastbourne in the fifth event of the year. And going into the respective league individual championships at Sheffield in September and Coventry on October, Toogood has revealed some encouraging news.

He said: "The series has been very well attended by fans throughout the country so far and as a sport we have to be delighted with that. "I would like to thank the supporters for their backing of the five events to date, most of which have seen increased attendance levels on last year. "Now we have the Premier League Riders' Championship to look forward to at Sheffield on September 27 and that's an event which is always well attended. "And I would like to congratulate Eastbourne on a successful staging of the Elite League Pairs. It also came over superbly on TV." In an additional major event, Coventry host the Grand Prix Challenge on Friday, September 18, with the top three riders securing a GP spot in the 2010 series. The action starts at 8pm.

SUPER 7EVEN SERIES 2009 BRITISH UNDER 21 FINAL: Lakeside - LEWIS BRIDGER. BRITISH FINAL: Poole - CHRIS HARRIS. PREMIER LEAGUE PAIRS: Somerset - BIRMINGHAM. PREMIER LEAGUE FOURS: Workington - WORKINGTON. ELITE LEAGUE PAIRS: Eastbourne - POOLE. PREMIER LEAGUE RIDERS' CHAMPIONSHIP: Sheffield, Sunday September 27. ELITE LEAGUE RIDERS' CHAMPIONSHIP: Coventry, Friday October 2. PLUS: 2009 GRAND PRIX CHALLENGE: Coventry, Friday September 18. ELITE LEAGUE LATEST... BELLE VUE moved off the bottom of the table with a hard-working 49-43 win over Coventry at Kirkmanshulme lane, local youngster James Wright enjoying one of the best nights of his career with a paid-18 score. Aces boss Chris Morton said: "With the matches in hand that we have, we can pull up to mid-table, and I think we showed that this team is good enough to do that. "When this team rides as well as it can do, we can beat anyone. We've had a lot of in and out form this year, and we want it to be more like this!" COVENTRY co-boss Peter Oakes made his feelings clear after the Bees scraped a point from a six-point defeat at Belle Vue on Monday when they had been looking to cement a play-off place. Oakes said: "I thought it was a dreadful performance, and it gives the promotion a lot to think about. "You have to look as to whether it was a one-off or not, but it was awful and we were fortunate in some ways to come out of it with a point." EASTBOURNE's on-off move for Daniel Nermark is back on again after the club moved to help him out with machinery, and they will provide him with two bikes previously used by David Norris. Promoter Bob Dugard said: "He didn't think it was worth bringing his own engines over here for eight meetings, but I own one of David's bikes and I've bought the other one off him so Daniel will use both of them. "We've also fixed him up with a mechanic. I wanted to do something and Daniel is a rider I rate as a 100% tryer." IPSWICH boss Pete Simmons hailed the improved confidence within his team after an emphatic home win over Peterborough continued the Witches' recent progress away from the bottom of the table. Scott Nicholls scored a paid maximum, Robert Miskowiak dropped just one point from six rides and Simmons said: "I'm impressed once more and I'm sure everyone out there is. "We look so confident all of a sudden and I just hope the team keeps fit and strong until the rest of the season. That's four big home wins on the trot and everyone is riding so well. It's just superb."  LAKESIDE stand-in skipper Lee Richardson says the Hammers must be careful to avoid home slip-ups over the closing matches of the season as they look to book a play-off place. Richardson said: "In the past, our track has been a difficult place for a lot of riders to come and perform, but at the moment they seem to be able to ride the place okay. Maybe we aren't riding it so well! "We do have one or two riders whose confidence is a bit brittle at the moment, but the play-offs are still a realistic target and although we've finished our away programme we do have some tough home matches coming up." PETERBOROUGH manager Trevor Swales pulled no punches about the Panthers' play-off prospects after two heavy defeats on the road, with Monday's 58-37 defeat at Wolverhampton following a 60-36 reverse at Ipswich. Swales said: "This has to go down as one of the worst performance I've ever seen from a Peterborough team. Yes, we scored 37 points against a very good team, but the fact we had two tactical rides in there doesn't give a true reflection. "We have clearly lost what form we had and I am not going to say anything about the play-offs. Put it this way, we will be lucky to keep out of a relegation battle if we carry on like this." POOLE boss Neil Middleditch is hopeful that some help will come forward for popular reserve Steve Boxall, who has announced his retirement after a series of engine blow-ups. Middleditch said: "Steve has won the hearts of the crowd and it's a great shame that this has happened. He always gives me 100 per cent and you can never ask anymore than that of a rider.  "This is a real blow because he has given us much more of a sting in our tail than we've had of late. Let's hope that somebody or something will help change his mind and keep him racing."  SWINDON boss Alun Rossiter was an angry man after the Robins' late fightback at Lakeside left them just short of victory in a controversial Heat 15. Rossiter said: "(Piotr) Swiderski was all over the place and took (Matej) Zagar's back wheel out and took his chain off. Don't get me wrong, it was a great meeting and I'm not using the referee as an excuse but we came back brilliantly and looked like getting ourselves out of jail until that last heat.  "I've just got to try and take the positives out of coming away with a point."  WOLVERHAMPTON No.1 Fredrik Lindgren pulled off one of the rides of the season to salvage a draw for his team at Coventry - passing both Chris Harris and Edward Kennett in the closing stages of Heat 15. Lindgren said: "That was some ride, even though I say it myself. I just studied what the other boys were doing in front of me and decided to make my move at the right time.  "I hadn't made a good start and I could see PK (Peter Karlsson) had done so well and I didn't want to let him down. I knew I had to do something special and thankfully I managed to pull it off for the team." PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST... BERWICK put an end to an unwanted record when they gained their first win in 12 attempts against Edinburgh with a 51-41 outcome at Shielfield Park on Saturday. Team boss Dave Peet said: "It shows what you can achieve when you've got a rider in such great form as Tero (Aarnio) blasting the opposition apart at reserve, as that makes wins like this tonight more achievable." BIRMINGHAM boss Graham Drury was able to reflect on one of the best weekends of his managerial career with away wins at both Rye House and Newport for the buoyant Brummies. Drury said: "Everyone will point to Jason Lyons and Tomasz Piszcz for special praise at Rye House, but it was all about a team effort and I cannot emphasise that enough. It was one of the best results during my time in charge. Then to go to Newport and win like we did was excellent." EDINBURGH slipped to defeat in weekend away matches at Berwick and Glasgow with the injury to Andrew Tully leaving the Monarchs with problems in their top-order. Promoter John Campbell said: "If he is going to be out for the season, then we must set out again to find a short-term replacement. Knowing how difficult it was to find a 7.32 replacement for Thomas Jonasson, it is not going to be easy to find someone on 7.33 which is Andrew's average. It's a dreadful thought." GLASGOW co-promoter Alan Dick has praised recent signing William Lawson, who has been in tremendous form since making the switch to Ashfield last month. Dick said: "He has always been a very talented rider and what he needs is a nice clear run of form to build his confidence, although all we have seen since his arrival is the model professional and long may that continue." KING'S LYNN are taking note of the threat offered by in-form Birmingham at the top of the table - and the Stars will now be without reserve Kozza Smith due to a broken ankle and fibia sustained at Rye House. Manager Rob Lyon said: "All credit to Birmingham who have turned their season around, and we are now drawn level on 35 points. The pressure is on us to win by more than six points against Edinburgh on Wednesday to stay at the top, but losing Kozza is a big blow to us."  NEWCASTLE have moved into the top half of the Premier League table after an impressive run of results - including a dramatic comeback to snatch a 47-47 draw at fierce rivals Redcar last Thursday. Boss George English said: "Our Danish duo (Kenni Larsen and Rene Bach) rode their socks of to make sure we didn't lose in a very fine show indeed. Most would have written us off pre-match, but we are a lot better than people think and teams would be advised not to under-estimate us these days." NEWPORT skipper Craig Watson is on target to achieve his aim of a track comeback by the end of the season - having crashed out of the Wasps' very first meeting back in March. Watson said: "I've been given medical clearance to get back in the gym, which is a vital step forward in getting back on my bike. I really want to ride in my Testimonial which is pencilled in for the end of October, and I feel it is now heading in the right direction." REDCAR were left frustrated after racing into a 14-point lead against rivals Newcastle, only to be pegged back for a draw with an unusual 47-47 scoreline. Bears skipper Gary Havelock said: "We threw it away a bit. Fair play to Newcastle, but we've been struggling to get everyone firing on the same night. A couple of lads seem to be going through a barren spell although I personally feel I'm getting back to somewhere near where I want to be." RYE HOUSE saw their impressive record of 65 consecutive home wins ended when Birmingham snatched a dramatic 46-43 verdict at Hoddesdon on Saturday. The Rockets were just nine short of matching their all-time record of 74 straight wins, set across 1977-81, having previously been beaten around their home circuit in September 2006. SCUNTHORPE promoter Rob Godfrey is hoping to build on a hard-earned win over Newcastle when the Scorpions complete their Knockout Cup quarter-final at Redcar on Thursday. Godfrey said: "There are a lot of positives to take out of the meeting, and now the target is to make it through to the semi-finals of the Cup. If we can get through it will be an excellent achievement for the club." SHEFFIELD have confirmed they are looking for a short term replacement for injury victim Paul Cooper. Cooper crashed heavily in the weekend defeat at Newcastle and suffered a shattered ankle and heel and broken bones in his foot. Tigers owner Neil Machin said: "We are looking at possibilities because we cannot afford to track a novice in place of Coops at this busy stage of the season." SOMERSET have been hit by a fractured collarbone for in-form reserve Tom Brown which is likely to keep him out for three to four weeks. Rebels promoter David Croucher said: "In spite of his 3.30 average Tom has been banging in six points a meeting at the Oak Tree Arena most weeks, and that is going to leave a big gap in the line-up. We need to run a seven-man team and the search is now on for a temporary replacement." STOKE star Jason Bunyan has pledged his future to the Potters having enjoyed a highly successful first season at Loomer Road. Bunyan said: "I want to win and want the team to win, and I'm really enjoying my time here. I've told Dave (Tattum) that I want to return here next season, and we can hopefully build the team around a few of us. It may take a year or two to turn things around but I feel we are going in the right direction." WORKINGTON boss Ian Thomas was delighted with the all-round performance in the Comets' weekend win over Stoke, which moved them back into the Premier League's top four. Thomas said: "It was a good win and also the first time this season that the three heat leaders have got maximums from their first four rides. The boys were saying it was a lot better having a seven-man team as there's not as much pressure on the younger riders." FIXTURE PICTURE... WEDNESDAY AUGUST 12: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Poole v Swindon 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE: Birmingham v Somerset 7.30, King's Lynn v Edinburgh 7.30 THURSDAY AUGUST 13: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Peterborough v Belle Vue 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE: Sheffield v Newport 7.45 PREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP 2nd leg: Redcar v Scunthorpe 7.30 NATIONAL LEAGUE KO CUP: Bournemouth v Plymouth 7.30 BRITISH UNDER-15 CHAMPIONSHIP: Isle of Wight 7.30 ANGLIAN PAIRS, Ipswich 7.30 FRIDAY AUGUST 14: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Lakeside v Belle Vue 8pm PREMIER LEAGUE: Edinburgh v Stoke 7.30, Scunthorpe v Rye House 7pm, Somerset v Workington 7.30 NATIONAL LEAGUE: Newport v Buxton 7pm, Plymouth v Isle of Wight 7.30, Scunthorpe v Rye House (follows PL fixture), Weymouth v King's Lynn 7.15 SATURDAY AUGUST 15: PREMIER LEAGUE: Berwick v Sheffield 7pm, Rye House v Redcar 7pm, Stoke v King's Lynn 7.30, Workington v Edinburgh 7pm SUNDAY AUGUST 16: PREMIER LEAGUE: Newcastle v Stoke 6.30, Newport v Redcar 5pm NATIONAL LEAGUE: Buxton v Bournemouth 3pm ASHFIELD CLASSIC: Glasgow 4pm MONDAY AUGUST 17: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Belle Vue v Wolverhampton 7.30, Peterborough v Swindon 7.30 TUESDAY AUGUST 18: NATIONAL LEAGUE PAIRS: Isle of Wight 7.30 WEDNESDAY AUGUST 19: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Poole v Ipswich 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE: Birmingham v Rye House 7.30, King's Lynn v Glasgow 7.30 THURSDAY AUGUST 20: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Ipswich v Belle Vue 7.30, Swindon v Eastbourne 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE: Sheffield v Glasgow 7.45 NATIONAL LEAGUE: Bournemouth v Buxton 7.30 NATIONAL TROPHY: Isle of Wight v Mildenhall 7.30 FRIDAY AUGUST 21: ELITE LEAGUE KO CUP: Coventry v Belle Vue 8pm PREMIER LEAGUE: Edinburgh v Birmingham 7.30, Scunthorpe v Glasgow 7pm, Somerset v Rye House 7.30 NATIONAL LEAGUE: Plymouth v Mildenhall 7.30, Scunthorpe v King's Lynn (follows PL fixture) NATIONAL TROPHY: Weymouth v Buxton 7.15 SATURDAY AUGUST 22:  SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Eastbourne v Wolverhampton 7.30, Lakeside v Coventry 8pm PREMIER LEAGUE: Berwick v Birmingham 7pm, Rye House v Somerset 7pm, Workingon v King's Lynn 7pm NATIONAL LEAGUE: King's Lynn v Bournemouth 7.30 SUNDAY AUGUST 23: OLLY ALLEN TESTIMONIAL: Coventry 1pm PREMIER LEAGUE: Glasgow v Birmingham 4pm, Newcastle v Edinburgh 6.30, Newport v Scunthorpe 5pm NATIONAL LEAGUE: Buxton v Rye House 3pm NATIONAL TROPHY: Mildenhall v Weymouth 4pm MONDAY AUGUST 24: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Belle Vue v Poole 7.30, Wolverhampton v Swindon 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE: Redcar v Edinburgh 7.30 TUESDAY AUGUST 25: NATIONAL TROPHY: Isle of Wight v Buxton 7.30 WEDNESDAY AUGUST 26: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Poole v Peterborough 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE: Birmingham v Edinburgh 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP: King's Lynn v Redcar/Scunthorpe 7.30
