COOK ON A ROLL AFTER CLAIMING DOUBLE KNOCKHILL POLE
In-form Ginetta Junior Championship with Henderson Insurance title contender Jake Cook eased to another brace of pole position starts at Knockhill Circuit in Scotland , Saturday, 15th August, during a dry but very windy qualifying session at the challenging 1.27-mile Fife track.
Following on from a perfect weekend a fortnight ago at Snetterton in Norfolk – where he took two pole positions, two race wins and posted the fastest lap in each encounter – the TJ Motorsport star set his stall out in no uncertain terms earlier today during the round 13 and 14 qualifying session.
Producing a best lap of 1m04.465 seconds (70.99mph) to seal the top spot on the grid for the first of Sunday’s races, 0.323 seconds clear of his closest rival, Cook’s second fastest time of 1m04.480 seconds gave him pole for round 14 by an even greater margin – just under half a second.
“I didn’t know if I’d hold pole position at the end but I managed to do two quick times which I was happy with”, commented the 16-year-old, “Obviously I want to try and win both races tomorrow and we’re aiming for the championship too. Hopefully we can close up on Sarah (Moore – series points leader) even more this weekend.”
Heading into tomorrow’s races, the second of which is set to be screened live on Freeview, cable and digital satellite channel ITV4, Sarah Moore is 22 points ahead of Cook – the latter earning two bonus points today for his pole position laps – although her closest challenger is actually Muzz Racing’s Aaron Williamson who is currently 10 points to the good over Cook.
Williamson qualified third fastest for round 13 and, importantly, will start alongside Cook on the front row for round 14. Moore, meanwhile, while line up fourth on the grid at the wheel of her Tockwith Motorsport entered Ginetta for race one but will be on the inside line in third place for the second encounter.
Chris Swanwick was the best of the Tollbar Racing drivers with an impressive second fastest time for round 13 while for round 14 he will line-up in fourth position. Alex Austin meanwhile, who had the disappointment of a non-finish during the last round at Snetterton, will start fifth for both races as he bids to get back on terms with Cook, Williamson and Moore.
The remainder of the top 10 grid order for round 13 sees Carl Stirling start in sixth position ahead of Louise Richardson and Mitchell Hale on row four and Shane Stoney and Tom Howard on row five. For round 14, Richardson will line up in sixth ahead of Stirling, Stoney, Howard and Hale.
Round 13 of the 2009 Ginetta Junior Championship with Henderson Insurance is timetabled to begin at 11.15 , Sunday, 16th August, with round 14 set to follow at around 16.15. Both 12-lap encounters are expected to be screened live on Freeview, digital satellite and cable channel ITV4.
