Glynn Geddie set the testing pace ahead of rounds 15 and 16 of the 2009 Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Silverstone today (Friday 29 August 2009). James Sutton was second fastest while Karl Leonard headed pro-am2.
In a day that left the top times rather shuffled, Geddie (Team Parker Racing) set a best lap of 57.720s to top the testing times for the first time in his career. It was the latest stage in his impressive run of results through the summer. He also headed pro-am1, but cautioned that the qualifying pace could on Saturday morning could be faster still. "I'm pleased to be first," said the young Scot. "But most of the pro drivers were not on new rubber and I never really got the best out of my new tyres."
Sutton (Red Line Racing) headed the times in the first session, which started dry but was almost immediately hit by a heavy rain shower. Conditions then improved through the session, but the track was never fully dry. In the fully dry afternoon session, Sutton made a late switch to new tyres, but felt he should have been faster. "That's probably not far off, and the car feels good for qualifying."
Michael Caine (Motorbase Performance), Tim Bridgman (Team Parker Racing) and Tim Harvey (Red Line Racing) were next up, and were very evenly matched as they all ran on tyres that had been used in the previous race weekend at Knockhill. "The car feels right," said Caine, who was one of three drivers to top the timesheets during the final three minutes of testing. Title contenders Bridgman and Harvey were content with their pace and are likely to jump to the top of the times when new tyres go on for qualifying.
Sixth fastest overall and second in pro-am1 to Geddie was Robert Lawson (JHR), while an impressive seventh overall was Karl Leonard (Team Parker Racing). Leonard topped pro-am2 by three-tenths of a second, but echoed the comments of Geddie and Sutton in feeling that his pace should have been faster on new tyres. "I didn't get as much out of the new tyres as I expected, and it's going to be very tight in qualifying," said Leonard as just 1.3s covered the top 15 cars in testing.
Pro-am1 contenders Tony Gilham (Red Line Racing) and Ollie Jackson (Motorbase Performance) both ran strongly to take eighth and ninth fastest, while championship newcomer John Gaw (Team Kinfaun) was an impressive tenth fastest overall and second in pro-am2.
