BTCC title race heads to Rockingham

THE HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship heads to Rockingham for the penultimate round on Sunday, September 20 with the title race still firmly in the balance.

Racing Silverline drivers Mat Jackson and Jason Plato shared the wins as RML’s Chevrolets dominated the three races at Silverstone last Sunday (August 31) but it is still Colin Turkington leading the pack for Team RAC.

The 27-year-old from Portadown in Northern Ireland slightly increased his lead in the Drivers’ standings to 11 points from VX Racing’s double winning champion Italian Fabrizio Giovanardi as he strives to win his first BTCC title.

Oxford-based Plato is in third spot in the drivers’ championship following two podium finishes at Silverstone, but the weekend belonged to Warwickshire’s Mat Jackson who moved seven places into fifth and within striking distance of VX Racing’s Matt Neal.

Who will win the 2009 BTCC title is still anyone’s guess but the atmosphere at Rockingham is guaranteed to be tense as the drivers and teams know this is the last chance to make a push for the silverware.

Fans of the race series will know that the track action is non-stop, and visitors to the Northamptonshire circuit can expect a great day out for the family in addition to the bumper-to-bumper racing as there will be plenty of off-track entertainment.

On Sunday in between the races there will be superb entertainment for the whole family, with monster trucks, motorcycle stunt shows, an amazing sky-diving display, and the classic British WWII Spitfire putting on a terrific air display.

For the younger members of the family there will be lots of fun things to do, from the amazing bungee trampoline to racing simulators, climbing walls, face painting and bouncy castles.

Rockingham Director, Charlotte Orton, said "We are really looking forward to hosting the penultimate touring car event of the year and we're committed to making it a fantastic day full of entertainment for young and old alike.

“This year’s title race is going down to the wire and it is going to be a very fierce competition between the top three drivers, but who wins it will be very much determined by the results at Rockingham. This is the last chance for fans to come and cheer on their local hero’s home to victory."

Rockingham lets you get closer to the action than any other circuit with free access to the touring car paddock and a free pit lane walkabout. With the best trackside views of the season, fans won’t miss a minute of the action from one of the free grandstand seats which overlook the whole track. Children aged 15 and under get in for free.
