Martin steps up to Porsche Carrera Cup GB
Former motocross ace Alex Martin will step up to the 2009 Porsche Carrera Cup GB for the next two races at Rockingham (19/20 September), racing with the GT Marques team of Paul Mace. The 22-year old racer from Somerset only started racing Porsches earlier this season, but has already shown excellent pace in the GT Cup and is now eager to make the next step up the racing ladder. He will contest the final two Carrera Cup GB weekends of 2009 at Rockingham and Brands Hatch as a lead-in towards a full campaign in 2010."I used to compete in motocross to a high standard, but I picked up a lot of injuries," said Martin, who raced on two wheels for six years, often racing every other weekend. Encouraged to switch to cars by his father Rupert, Alex started racing a 996-model 911GT3 Cup car at the start of the 2009 season. Now, they have added a latest 997-model car to the squad so that Rupert can do some races in the older car."I'm after a bit more competition and I'm definitely up for the move to the Carrera Cup," said Martin, who will race in the pro-am1 category. "I can't wait to get out and I'm testing with Tim Harvey next week. The whole family is into Porsches, so it was definitely the right choice," said Martin.
