Texaco Havoline Ginetta Championship heading down to the wire

Mark Davies heads to Brands Hatch this weekend with a 50-point lead in the Texaco Havoline Ginetta Championship, but that isn’t as big as it sounds.

With six race wins to his credit, you could be forgiven for thinking Mark Davies was strolling to the title. He has a 50-point cushion in the championship but with four races to go and 37 points available per round, life is tougher than it looks.

Davies has opposition from Andrew Smith who has taken two wins and has been a points-scorer in each race and could narrow the 50-point gap this weekend. He may, though, need a little help – his pace doesn’t always match that of Davies. However, if Davies loses points to Dominic Pettit, who is always quick, then perhaps Smith isn’t out of the equation.

Pettit, four-times a winner, has proved that he can be the match of Davies and could well be a winner this weekend. The Ginetta Junior graduate has raced hard all season but suffered a brace of drive-through penalties at Knockhill which cost him points and a retirement at Rockingham blunted his challenge. But for those setbacks, the story of the season could be very different.

The fight for honours should be all about these three, but don’t ignore David Jackson who has been improving all season and could be a podium finisher at Brands Hatch , Matt Bell (younger brother of GT ace Rob) who has impressed in his limited outings this season and Russell McCarthy whose season started badly but has picked up in recent rounds.

Sean Huyton has been on the pace in his first year of Ginetta racing while so, too, has Freddie Hetherington. George Murrells has been getting faster all season, while Julian Barratt has been quick (but perennially unlucky) on his occasional outings. If Lady Luck is with him, rather than being on holiday or somewhere, he should be a front-runner. And that could make the way points are distributed very interesting....
