Kamui Kobayashi signs for Sauber

Good move from Peter Sauber - this guy was impressive in his last couple of races for Toyota

Interesting this guy was guy good in Asia GP2 - bit disappointing in GP2 itself - yet given his chance in an F1 car did a mega job. He drove with aggression and performed some ballsy overtaking manouveres - as if each race was last chance to showcase his undoubted talents.

Anyway it's also good news for F1 and also the Japanese - to have some representation in the sport after Honda and Toyota left and Nakajima got ditched by Williams as the Toyota engine deal expired.

Kamui did not turn up with a huge bag of gold for the drive either - and if he had not got a job he would have had to return to the land of the rising sun to work in his dad's sushi bar.

It's also good for Toyota - as Kamui is a product of Toyota's driver development programme - and undoubtedly his apppointment at Sauber will provide a little cheer to the departing Toyota F1 squad.

Sauber's comments below:

"In the final two grands prix of last season he was granted an unexpected chance to show his skills, and he made impressive use of it," said team founder Peter Sauber in a statement on Thursday.

"Particularly in the Abu Dhabi race he demonstrated not only that he can drive fast and aggressively, but also his ability to successfully implement a strategy.

"I am convinced he has a great deal of potential and will be able to make the most of it in our team."
