Judges at the court in St Gallen, in eastern Switzerland, based the record-breaking fine on the man's estimated wealth of over £14 million.

The penalty surpassed the previous record of £67,000 handed to a Porsche driver in 2008 in Zurich.

More than 400 drivers a month fined in 50mph motorway average speed trap.

The driver, who had a string of previous traffic offences, was caught going 85mph in a 50mph limit zone.

“The accused ignored elementary traffic rules with a powerful vehicle out of a pure desire for speed,” the court said in its judgement.
