V8 Supercar driver Jason Bright was in pit lane today (Thursday, 11 February) with teammates, Marcus Zukanovic and Allan Simonsen to unveil the Shelby Mustang GT500 that will compete in this weekend’s Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour Showroom Enduro at Mount Panorama.
Also on hand were former Bathurst 12 Hour winners Garry Holt, Damien White and Rod Salmon along with Ford FVP F6 drivers Ken Douglas and James Moffat.
The Shelby Mustang GT500, which was imported from America is the first of its kind to race in an endurance Event and Zukanovic is hoping it will last the grueling 12 hour event.“We’ve been working on it if for a while now and hope it runs well. It will be interesting as it is the first time someone has tried to drive one of these in such a long Event but we’re confident it will take the challenge.”
Zukanovic thought long and hard with his father Mick to get the right look.
“We’re really happy with the livery, it’s the same basic red as the famous Allan Moffat Coca-Cola Mustang, which dominated the Improved Touring Racing back in the late 60’s early 70’s,” said Zukanovic. “The Moffat Mustang was involved in one of the greatest ever touring car races at Mt Panorama in 1972 – and finished second to Pete Geoghegan’s Super Falcon, so we hope to go one better this time.”
Reigning champions Team Mitsubishi Ralliart of White, Salmon and Tulloch also revealed their new livery, which will sport Pedigree Petfoods as its primary backer. The team has won back-to-back titles in 2008/09 and is looking to claim a third.
“We are hoping to win again. The car is looking good and we’re feeling great as a team,” said White.
2007 Bathurst 12 Hour winner Garry Holt is also looking for a come-back and boasts the same Eastern Creek Karting livery and will be joined by teammates Paul Morris and John Bowe in the BMW 335i.This will be Bowe’s first drive of the BMW 335i, although he and team mate Dick Johnson won the Eastern Creek 12 Hour event back in the mid 90’s.
Holt will face strong opposition from ECU specialist Ken Douglas and newly appointed Ford Performance Racing Supercar driver James Moffat with their Boylan Traffic Solutions Ford FP F6 in Class B – Harrop High Performance Rear Wheel Drive. The Ford is strong enough to spring a surprise given its massive torque band and preparation by long time Ford production car expert Ted Robinson.
The Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour Showroom Enduro is in its 4th year, with a grid of 45 expected to start. The race features production cars in a class structure representative of the mass road-going market. BMW, Mitsubishi, Ford, Holden, Nissan and Subaru will compete for outright honors.
