Ascari and Ferrari share Oulton GT pole honours

A superb battle is in store in Easter Monday's Oulton Park opening rounds of the 2010 Avon Tyres British GT Championship, with reigning champions David and Godfrey Jones and their Preci-Spark Ascari set to start round one from the pole and the Rosso Verde Ferrari 430 Scuderia of Allan Simonsen and Hector Lester on top spot for round two.

David Jones led the way in an interrupted first qualifying session this afternoon, setting a best time of 1m 39.212s. His Ascari was six-tenths quicker than closest rival Duncan Cameron in the MTECH Ferrari. The session was red-flagged after a colossal accident at Old Hall for Viper pilot Craig Wilkins; he was unhurt but his car was extensively damaged and may miss Monday's races as a result.

In session two, great Dane Simonsen was the man on top: Allan rounded Oulton in 1m 36.934s, two-tenths ahead of Matt Griffin for MTECH, with Adam Wilcox third in the Predator CCTV Scuderia to make it a Ferrari 1-2-3.

There was a good showing for the exciting new United Autosports Audis; they will start round one from third and fourth on the grid, and round two from fifth and 11th.

G4 class qualifying honours were shared by the Speedworks Ginetta of Chester-based Jamie Stanley and the Prestige Car Leasing KTM of Rory Butcher.

British GT is sponsored by UK tyre manufacturer Avon Tyres and is further supported by Sunoco Racing Fuels, Anglo American Oil Company and The Independent.
