VW Racer Lloyd Preparing Hard For Scirocco Debut
Less than eight weeks now remain until the start of Daniel Lloyd's maiden campaign in the pan-European Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup, undoubtedly the biggest challenge so far in the Huddersfield teenager's burgeoning motor racing career. Daniel, who celebrated his 19th birthday last Friday, 4th March, will be the sole British representative in the prestigious one-make saloon car category and all eyes will be on the 2009 ELF Renault Clio Winter Cup Champion as he graduates into European competition for the first time. Having earned his place on the Scirocco R-Cup grid following a thoroughly impressive display during a two day Volkswagen Motorsport assessment at Oschersleben, Germany, back in November, Daniel is now preparing for a special pre-season 'Fitness Camp' which begins this weekend, 12th/13th March. "It seems like an age since we had the confirmation about my place on the VW Scirocco R-Cup grid so I'm really raring to go and get the season underway", he commented, "I can't wait for the fitness camp this weekend, that'll be the proper start to my involvement with Volkswagen but I'm sure it'll be very tough - I'm not under any illusions!" As a chief support category to the world-renowned DTM 'Deutsche Touring Masters' championship, the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup has a very high profile. Watched by tens of thousands of spectators at each event, Volkswagen's flagship series will also benefit from superb live television coverage in 2011 on digital satellite and cable channel Motors TV. So while British fans will only have one trackside opportunity to see Daniel in action this year, during the DTM package's visit to Brands Hatch on 3rd/4th September, his participation in the Scirocco R-Cup can be followed on Motors TV - Sky Digital channel 413 and Virgin Media channel 545 in the UK. In addition to that, the championship has produced a fantastic iPhone app which will allow anyone with the Apple hardware to get all the latest information regarding the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup, race results and also live timing from each event. Daniel added: "It's a massive privilege to be racing in the championship this year and I'm really looking forward to visiting all of the European tracks for the first time. Volkswagen put a lot of support behind the drivers and with the live TV, the iPhone app and a slot on the DTM bill, I've got a great opportunity to build my profile and, hopefully, have a successful season." Daniel arrives in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup with a reputation as one of the UK's brightest young saloon car racers. Since graduating from a successful karting career at the beginning of 2008, the West Yorkshire sportsman has enjoyed a high level of prominence. Finishing fourth overall in the Ginetta Junior Championship in his first season of car competition, with three race wins to his credit, Daniel moved into the Renault Clio Cup the following year and became a consistent front-runner before winning the 2009 Winter Cup. Budget restrictions did threaten to de-rail his progress last year but outstanding one-off debut outings in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship and Avon Tyres British GT Championship ensured his stock remained incredibly high. Following this weekend's Volkswagen Motorsport fitness camp, Daniel's first test outing in his Scirocco R-Cup car will come in mid-April before the championship curtain-raiser at Hockenheim in Germany on Saturday, 30th April.
