BIG EVENT LATEST... GREAT Britain Young Lions managers Phil Morris and Neil Vatcher have announced their plans for the British Youth Championship - with an invitation to new riders to get involved.
The series, previously known as the Under-15 Championship is open to any British rider under the age of 16. There are three classes catered for, with a British Championship at 500cc and 250cc levels, and a 125cc support class, and any new riders who wish to be involved should e-mail younglionsspeedway@hotmail.co.uk for full details.
There will also be two training days during the season, provided free of charge, with a full day's tuition provided by riders such as former World Champion Gary Havelock. Dates and times for these events are to be confirmed. The Championship itself takes in events at Newport (May 15), Buxton (June 12), Plymouth (Aug 6), Isle of Wight (Aug 18), Sittingbourne (Sept 11) and Stoke (Sept 25).
Morris and Vatcher will be taking a keen interest in the first of the 2011 SpeedwayGB Events series - the British Under-21 Final at Lakeside on April 15.
Defending Champion Joe Haines has already received a boost in his bid to retain the title, as although he is currently without a team place following his accident in Australia over the winter, he picked up track time with two guest bookings for former club Rye House during their season-opening Anglia Cup fixtures against Ipswich.
Haines and his fellow nine seeded riders for the showpiece event at Purfleet are set to discover which six riders will join them in the line-up, with the semi-final taking place at Stoke on Saturday, March 26.
There have been two changes to the initially-declared Loomer Road field, with new Potters signing Jaimie Pickard and Newcastle's Ritchie Worrall coming into the meeting in place of Ben Morley and Oliver Rayson.
The top rider in the Final at Lakeside, with the exception of Haines, Josh Auty, Jerran Hart and Tai Woffinden, will earn a place in the quarter-finals of the World Under-21 Championship at Lviv in the Ukraine. Haines, Auty and Hart are already booked in for the German qualifier at Herxheim, whilst Woffinden has elected to concentrate on his senior commitments this year.
