Al Harthy Leads The Way In Pro-Am 1 At Snetterton
Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship front-runner Ahmad Al Harthy produced a highly impressive testing performance at the newly revised Snetterton 300 Circuit today, Tuesday, 22nd March, to end the outing as the fastest Pro-Am 1 Class runner - an excellent seventh quickest overall. As the pre-cursor to the first two rounds of the 2011 season at Brands Hatch less than two weeks from now, today's officially timed test outing marked the first opportunity for the Oman Air Racing Team 29-year-old and his category rivals to get an indication of their pace relative to each other. During the morning session at the newly configured 2.97-mile Norfolk track, Ahmad produced outstanding pace to lap with the sixth best time of 1m52.268 seconds (95.20mph), which also meant he led Pro-Am 1 by a full 0.4 seconds. In the afternoon he delivered once again in fine style in his Oman Air Racing Team car - which is also backed by Nawras, National Bank of Oman, Brand Oman, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs and Oman Ministry of Tourism. Posting a best of 1m51.057 seconds (96.23mph) to go seventh fastest in the session and for the day overall, he improved by well over a second on his morning time. Combined for the day, Ahmad ended his first officially timed run in his brand new 450bhp Porsche 911 GT3 car just 0.8 seconds shy of the outright pace and a full three 10ths of a second ahead of his closest Pro-Am 1 Class rival.Reflecting on the Snetterton test, Ahmad said: "Both the team and I are very happy with how the day has gone, everything went well in each session. It was the first time this year all of the drivers were together so I'm pleased we were so competitive. We approached the day the right way, had a good set-up and produced some good times."The new track at Snetterton is really challenging, it has a very nice flow to it and I really enjoyed driving it today. There is a good mixture of fast and slow corners and I think it should provide some very interesting racing this year, I'm looking forward to going back there in the summer."With the official test now completed, Ahmad is relishing the start of the season which will come less than two weeks from now over the weekend 2nd/3rd April at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent. Marking the start of his second year of racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship, the Omani star aims to get his campaign off to a good start at the 1.2-mile track.Following officially timed practice on Friday, 1st April, qualifying for the first two races of 2011 will take place at 11.55 on Saturday, 2nd April, with round one getting underway at 17.45. Round two is scheduled to commence at 13.15 on Sunday, 3rd April, and will be screened live in the UK on Freeview, digital satellite and cable channel ITV4 and also on the brand new ITV4 HD channel.
