Rally de Portugal Day 2 Round Up

Sébastien Ogier heads the leaderboard of Rally de Portugal after the second day of competition, with team-mate and reigning FIA World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb 37.6 seconds behind. Despite problems this afternoon, Jari-Matti Latvala overnights in third.Today’s route was the longest of the rally, covering two loops of three stages and 148.10 competitive kilometres. Overnight rain aided Latvala running at the head of the field this morning and the Finn managed to maintain his lead until the third stage, when he then lost out to a chasing Ogier. This afternoon, Latvala has been forced to limp through to the finish, a broken drive shaft and then a puncture in the final stage losing him significant time. He was lucky to maintain third overall. Both Citroën drivers have largely escaped unscathed, although Loeb lost time this morning running in Mikko Hirvonen’s dust, and then again this afternoon when he got caught in the dust of both Hirvonen and Latvala’s Fords. Britain’s Matthew Wilson has moved into fourth. Mikko Hirvonen - fifth overnight - has had a disappointing day; the Finn had to stop and change a puncture this morning, re-starting just ahead of Loeb, and then lost over three minutes in the final stage with broken rear suspension. He is nevertheless just 5.7 seconds behind Wilson. Henning Solberg has also suffered with a puncture and intermittent power steering problems and has dropped from fifth to sixth. Kimi Raikkonen has climbed from ninth to seventh, and Petter Solberg has moved from 20th to within the top 10, after plummeting down the leaderboard with a succession of punctures yesterday. Retirements from the day include Armindo Araujo, who was forced out with engine problems, and Khalid Al Qassimi with broken suspension after hitting a rock.Rally de Portugal - Results after Day 2
