Lloyd Fifth In Championship After Tough Carrera Cup Weekend

Daniel Lloyd rounded-out the first half of the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship fifth in the driver standings at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire on Sunday, 24th June, after securing sixth and fourth place finishes respectively in rounds nine and 10 of the season.Starting the weekend perfectly with the fastest time of all in the rain-affected pre-event test, the Huddersfield driver was ultra-consistent in qualifying – posting five laps all within just a tenth of a second of his fastest – but had to settle for fourth on the grid for both races.Determined to make progress onto the podium, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholar got a good launch off the line at the start of round nine on Saturday, 23rd June, and ran close in the wheeltracks of series leader Michael Meadows as he pushed hard to usurp his experienced rival. On lap two at the chicane though, Meadows made a costly mistake and clipped the tyre stack meaning Daniel had to take dramatic avoiding action. Controlling his car well, despite being forced over the grass on the infield which launched his Team Parker Racing car into the air, the West Yorkshireman did manage to rejoin the track in eighth before instantly hitting back to pass Ahmad Al Harthy for seventh. From that point on, bottled up behind Ben Barker, Daniel had an incredibly frustrating race and going into the final couple of laps only 0.2 seconds separated the pair. On lap 13 though, the TNT Post, TSD, Creechurch Private Wealth, Propack and TPA Yorkshire-backed racer did take sixth at the expense of Meadows after the latter retired with a puncture at Tower Bend.“It was a disappointing race”, said the 20-year-old, “Going into lap two I was fourth but through the first part of the chicane [Michael] Meadows smacked the tyres, that moved the tyre stack, and that then put me wide. It was a massive moment, it chucked the car in the air quite a bit but there was nothing obviously wrong with the car after that. It just cost us too much ground on the others.”Daniel again made a good start during Sunday’s 10th round and moved alongside third placed Jonas Gelzinis into Clervaux. However, being on the outside line proved costly and he was edged wide on the exit – having to run the wrong side of the tyre stack to avoid any potential collision. Put wide again at the chicane, he somehow managed to maintain fourth place but that’s where Daniel remained for the duration of the 15-lapper as he struggled with major understeer throughout. He was put under a lot of pressure during the first half of the race but did a great job to cope with the issues and eke out an advantage of one second later on.“I really struggled with understeer all the way through”, he explained, “When I wanted to get on the power I just had to wait and wait, it was really frustrating as there was nothing I could do about the top three at all – they were in a league of their own today. It’s not been a great weekend but we’ve had two more strong finishes, sixth and fourth, and taken away more points which is the main thing.”There is now a substantial seven week break in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship calendar with rounds 11 and 12 taking place over the weekend 11th/12th August at Snetterton in Norfolk.2012 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship Driver Standings (after Rd10):1st Michael Meadows, 175pts; 5th Daniel Lloyd, 124pts
