Pirelli tyres excel on Irish Tarmac ALMC Rally

Pirelli tyres excelled on the Aer Lingus Motor Club [ALMC] Rally in Ireland on Saturday 14 July, with the top four classified crews all using Pirellis highly-competitive RX7 and RX9 asphalt tyres.

This years rally attracted an impressive entry list with a wealth of UK championship competitors taking part in the fifth round of the MSA Asphalt Rally Championship. No less than eight of the top 10 were World Rally Cars and the entry was further complemented by an impressive line up of Group N cars as well as cars from all of the leading classes.

The one-day asphalt event was celebrating its fourth year based at the City North Hotel close to Dublin and challenged competitors over nine stages covering 160 competitive kilometres.

Welshman Melvyn Evans took the rally victory at the wheel of a Subaru Impreza WRC equipped with Pirelli tyres, claiming a dominant win by over one minute. James Belton finished second, also at the wheel of a Pirelli-equipped Subaru Impreza WRC.

Completing a Subaru podium clean sweep was Stephen Simpson who brought his Pirelli-equipped car to third overall. Fourth place was awarded to Damian Cole who also benefited from the use of Pirelli tyres on his Ford Focus RS WRC.

The club is delighted to have had so many crews attend the event from the UK championship: it was by far the best UK entry we have had since we became a part of it, explained Clerk of the Course, Noel Devlin. An event like this takes the hard work of a very large group of volunteers. Without their help and effort it could not take place, so thanks to all the marshals, officials, sponsors, residents and competitors who all played their part in the success of the rally.

Pirelli UK operations manager Matthew Corby commented: Results such as these prove the outstanding capability and durability of our Pirelli RX7 and RX9 asphalt tyres. We have seen a host of rallies won with the help of our tyres over the course of the year, and I am certain that we can help teams achieve more victories and podium results over the remainder of the busy motorsport season. Congratulations to Melvyn and his team on his fantastic victory
