The McLaren driver set his best time in the opening period of afternoon practice as a brief but heavy rain shower in the middle of the one-and-a-half-hour session then made the track too damp to permit further dry tyre running and the times naturally failed to improve. Although the conditions were sunny and hot at the start of the session, teams were aware of the threat of thunderstorms and a busy opening to the session saw the top time change hands frequently, with Kimi Raikkonen in charge early on, before he was eclipsed by the Ferraris of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. Then, when the drivers switched from the prime medium tyre to the soft option, a sequence of others including Jenson Button and eventually Hamilton with the lap that stood at the top until the session ended.Hamilton was followed by Raikkonen, who put in a lap just 0.185 behind the McLaren driver, and in third Bruno Senna, who ended up 0.258 behind the 2009 Hungarian GP winner. The top three were followed by Massa, Alonso and Button. When the rain fell, it did so with a heavy burst that caused a mass retreat from the track. When the cars did re-emerge it was on mix of full wet and intermediate tyres. Michael Schumacher was one of those who opted for inters and it proved the wrong choice for him as he slid off track and into the tyre barrier at Turn 11. 1.  Lewis Hamilton        McLaren-Mercedes      1m21.995            20 laps2.  Kimi Raikkonen        Lotus-Renault         1m22.180s  + 0.185  203.  Bruno Senna           Williams-Renault      1m22.253s  + 0.258  334.  Felipe Massa          Ferrari               1m22.417s  + 0.422  285.  Fernando Alonso       Ferrari               1m22.582s  + 0.587  226.  Jenson Button         McLaren-Mercedes      1m22.747s  + 0.752  177.  Paul di Resta         Force India-Mercedes  1m22.794s  + 0.799  238.  Sebastian Vettel      Red Bull-Renault      1m22.824s  + 0.829  189.  Romain Grosjean       Lotus-Renault         1m22.922s  + 0.927  1210  Michael Schumacher    Mercedes              1m23.160s  + 1.165  1911  Nico Rosberg          Mercedes              1m23.164s  + 1.169  2812  Pastor Maldonado      Williams-Renault      1m23.337s  + 1.342  2613  Nico Hulkenberg       Force India-Mercedes  1m23.713s  + 1.718  2514  Mark Webber           Red Bull-Renault      1m23.814s  + 1.819  1715  Kamui Kobayashi       Sauber-Ferrari        1m23.841s  + 1.846  2816  Jean-Eric Vergne      Toro Rosso-Ferrari    1m24.328s  + 2.333  2317  Daniel Ricciardo      Toro Rosso-Ferrari    1m24.345s  + 2.350  2718  Sergio Perez          Sauber-Ferrari        1m24.623s  + 2.628  2219  Vitaly Petrov         Caterham-Renault      1m24.823s  + 2.828  2820  Heikki Kovalainen     Caterham-Renault      1m25.220s  + 3.225  2821  Timo Glock            Marussia-Cosworth     1m27.104s  + 5.109  2722  Pedro de la Rosa      HRT-Cosworth          1m27.106s  + 5.111  1823  Charles Pic           Marussia-Cosworth     1m27.185s  + 5.190  2224  Narain Karthikeyan    HRT-Cosworth          1m27.822s  + 5.827  20
