On Sunday, 2nd September, Europes first ever drag racer will be on show at the Chelsea AutoLegends Festival in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Sydney Allards 1961 Allard Chrysler is a pioneering piece of motorsport history that shaped the way for future racing greats, with characteristics of Allards iconic art-deco, streamlined design still seen today at the highest level of motorsport.
The Allard Chrysler was first revealed to the press at Silverstone in 1961, and spent the majority of the next two years at race meetings. In its heyday, the vintage racer clocked mid-10 second quarter miles, from a standing start, and reached speeds of around 150mph. Massive public interest led Sydney Allard to found the International Drag Festival series in 1964, with six meetings throughout the UK and a big American presence amongst the competitors.
In recent years, the Allard Chrysler Action Group has painstakingly restored the vintage drag racer to its original condition, including a brand new engine to replace the one that was lost in the years after Allards death. The National Motor Museum in Beaulieu now owns the historic piece and is supporting its showcase at this years Chelsea AutoLegends Festival, which is now one of the countrys leading classic automotive events.
