Alex Zanardi takes Gold Medal at Brands Hatch Paralympic Handycling

Ex-Formula 1 driver Alex Zanardi, who had both legs amputated after an horrific Champ Car crash at the Lausitzring eleven years ago, competed in the H4 handcycling time trial at Brands Hatch earlier today. Zanardi, who has also competed in the New York Marathon, beat  Germany's Nobert Mosandl by nearly 30 seconds. 

Zanardi won two CART championship titles in North America during the late 1990s. He returned to racing less than two years after the accident, competing in the FIA World Touring Car Championship for BMW Team Italy-Spain between 2003 and 2009.Zanardi began competing in  handbiking, a form of paralympic cycling, with the stated goal of representing Italy at the 2012 Summer Paralympics.

He won his first senior international handbiking medal, a silver  in the H4 (Handbike) category time trial at the UCI World Road Para-Cycling Championships in September 2011

 Last time I was here (Brands Hatch) I was going about five times faster but I still love this circuit! he said.
