Double poles at Silverstone for Alex Lynn
British Formula 3 rookie Alex Lynn upset the form book at Silverstone this morning to snatch a pole position double in qualifying for the Fortec team. The 19-year-old from Essex beat his more experienced rivals to top spot by a three-tenth margin. Lynn, so often a frontrunner in pre-event testing in the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series this season, pulled off his twin-pole achievement in the closing minutes of the 30-minute session on Silverstones 3.7-mile Grand Prix circuit. Three of the Mercedes-powered drivers laps were good enough for pole.It was good, said master of understatement Lynn. The team worked really hard yesterday to get the car the best they could; they stayed late last night and put in a lot, and it paid off. My on-board lap timer wasnt working so I didnt know until I crossed the line and my engineer came on the radio to tell me Id done three laps good enough for pole. Its good, and it shows that hard work pays off in the end.As for this afternoons 30-minute race, in which he will chase his maiden British F3 win, Lynn said: Most of the hard work is done now so I just have to focus on getting a good start and seeing what I can do. Alex has three times finished second this season.Championship protagonists Jazeman Jaafar and Jack Harvey set second- and third-best time this morning for the Volkswagen-powered Carlin team, with their team-mates Carlos Sainz and Harry Tincknell next up.Fortecs Felix Serralles, who is closest on points to championship leader Harvey, was seventh quickest and championship returnee Rupert Svendsen-Cook was ninth for Double R. T-Sports Spike Goddard led the way in the National class by three tenths from his team-mate Pedro Pablo Calbimonte.Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International SeriesProvisional qualifying times / Silverstone Grand Prix / 8 September 2012Leading International class runners1 Alex LYNN / GBR, Fortec Dallara-Mercedes 1:53.6802 Jazeman JAAFAR / MAS, Carlin Dallara-Volkswagen 1:53.9873 Jack HARVEY / GBR, Carlin Dallara-Volkswagen 1:54.0084 Carlos SAINZ / ESP, Carlin Dallara-Volkswagen 1:54.0255 Harry TINCKNELL / GBR, Carlin Dallara-Volkswagen 1:54.1216 Hannes VAN ASSELDONK / NED, Fortec Dallara-Mercedes 1:54.1627 Felix SERRALLES / PUR, Fortec Dallara-Mercedes 1:54.5168 Pietro FANTIN / BRA, Carlin Dallara-Volkswagen 1:54.5739 Rupert SVENDSEN-COOK / GBR, Double R Dallara-Mercedes 1:54.68510 Pipo DERANI / BRA, Fortec Dallara-Mercedes 1:54.73111 Geoff UHRHANE / AUS, Double R Dallara-Mercedes 1:54.80812 Nick McBRIDE / AUS, T-Sport Dallara-Nissan 1:54.937National class1 Spike GODDARD / AUS, T-Sport Dallara-Mugen Honda 1:56.4202 Pedro Pablo CALBIMONTE / BOL, T-Sport Dallara-Mugen Honda 1:56.7943 Duvashen PADAYACHEE / AUS, Double R Dallara-Mugen Honda 1:56.962First-race gridLynnJaafarHarveySainzvan AsseldonkTincknellSerrallesFantinSvendsen-CookDeraniUhrhaneMcBride - GoddardCalbimontePadayachee
