Suzuki wins Swedish SBK Championship

Team Suzuki's Lucas Ockelfelt has clinched the Swedish Pro Superbike Championship after a thrilling climax that went down to the wire in the 14th and final race at Knutstorp at the weekend.

The 21 year old Team Edgezone Racing rider from Stockholm entered the final round with a 12-point advantage over main series rival Andreas Martensson (Honda) who won the first race with Ockelfelt second, cutting the lead to just seven points. Then, in a double twist of fate in the final race when the Suzuki rider suffered with a technical problem while in third place - and with Martensson leading and in a championship-winning position - second-placed rider Filip Backlund (Kawasaki) crashed out, which put the Team Suzuki Sweden rider into second position and back in front on points, which saw him lift the title by just two points.

Ockelfelt, who started racing in 2007, was the most consistent rider of the season and the only rider to finish on the podium at every race. He said: "I had some problems prior to the race and also during it. It started with me being ill the weekend before the race and then I had some technical trouble in the second race. But when Filip Backlund crashed, suddenly everything was on my side.

"I've won this and now I want to move on. In two weeks' time I'm going to Portugal to try the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup and to measure myself against the best in Europe. What happens in 2013 remains to be seen, but I would never have been where I am today without the help from Suzuki Sweden and my amazing team," added Ockelfelt.

Swedish Pro Superbike Final Points: 1 Lucas Ockelfelt (Suzuki GSX-R1000) 301 points, 2 Andreas Martensson (Honda) 299, 3 Eric Lindroth (Kawasaki) 207, 4 Filip Backlund (Kawasaki) 168, 5 Daniel Falemo (Kawasaki) 114.
