Two top four finishes and an increased lead in the Independents Trophy made it a good days work for Andrew Jordan and Pirtek Racing at the Rockingham Motor Speedway on Sunday (23 September) during rounds 22, 23 and 24 of the 2012 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship. However, while Andrew drove superbly in increasingly difficult conditions, it was a dramatic day for his team mate Jeff Smith who suffered a major accident at the high-speed Turn 1. Despite an impact measured at 5.7g, Jeff walked away from his Pirtek Racing Honda Civic, which stood up to the impact incredibly well.Andrews good weekend started on Saturday when he was third fastest behind Jason Plato and Gordon Shedden. Qualifying was good, and we were very close to Gordon. But Plato was away and there was nothing to gain by chasing him, said Andrew. So we scrubbed our tyres for the race.Race one on Sunday ran on a dry track before the rain arrived and was a good race for Andrew, even though Platos speed took him clear of the rest of the pack. I got a good start and Mat Jackson and Shedden went round the outside of me at the hairpin, but at the next corner they went in a bit hot and I cut back under them to take second. Then it was a case of looking after the tyres and I could see that Gordon was being quite hard on his. I couldnt do anything about Plato so it was quite a quiet race to second. In race two I got a really good start in the wet and went three abreast through Turn 1 with Plato and Collard. I could see that Shedden was strong in the conditions before the safety car came out. I got a good restart after the safety car and decided I had to make a break. But I just locked up into Hairpin and overshot. To compound his problems, Andrew was battling with windscreen wiper failure. It was okay when I was out front, but very difficult trying to come back through the pack. I got back to seventh and got past Rob Collard, which was important for the Independents points. We made a lot of changes for the third race, but the car was a real handful and it was nearly a crash at every corner. But it came good towards the end of the race and I was able to catch and pass Collard. We ended up fourth and first Independent and Collard dropped to 13th, which was good news. Overall it was a very good weekend and were in a good position for the Independents Trophy.
