Erebus Motorsport will bring its own international to the Australian GT Championship at the Armor All Gold Coast 600, October 19-21 when recently crowned FIA GT1 World Team Champion, Thomas Jger will pilot its SLS AMG GT3 Gullwing in Surfers Paradise.
Jger was recently confirmed as FIA GT1 World Team Champion driving for the all conquering Mnnich Motorsport outfit, which won the Drivers World Championship as well. He and team-mate, Nicky Pastorelli took out the World Championship event in Portugal in July and he finished sixth on the Drivers ladder.
The Munich-based 35-year-old will be piloting the #62 chromed Erebus Motorsport Gullwing that dominated proceedings at Phillip Island at the hands of Maro Engel. He will slot in as team-mate to current Australian GT Championship leader, Peter Hackett - who enters the Series penultimate round with a 14 point advantage.
Of all the internationals that will take to the beachside circuit during the October 19-21 weekend, Jger is arguably one of the most experienced - and versatile - on the world stage.
A former Porsche Carrera Cup Germany and MINI Challenge Germany Champion, he was the test and development driver for the SLS AMG GT3 from the very beginning and had the honour of delivering the SLS AMG GT3s first ever victory on the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 2010. Furthermore, he won the first 24 hour race for the Gullwing in Dubai in January.
In the late 1990's, he was a top three finisher in the German F3 Championship and raced in DTM between 2000 and 2003 with a best result of seventh in 2001.
With this being the SLS AMG GT3s debut on the Gold Coast street circuit, nobody could be better qualified to develop a setup for a new track than Jger.
For Championship leader Hackett, the Gold Coast weekend will be about continuing his year long consistent performances and maintaining the 14 point lead he currently holds.
The Armor All Gold Coast 600 Australian GT Championship races will be a pair of short and sharp 30 minute affairs rather than the one hour races that have been the norm thus far in 2012. With compulsory pitstops still being part of both races, the Erebus Motorsport strategists will be working overtime in an attempt to repeat the teams Phillip Island success.FROM BENEATH THE GULLWING:Thomas Jger - #62 Erebus Motorsport SLS AMG GT3 - on his first racing visit to Australia:
To come to Australia at this time of year is something that is exciting for me, said Jger. Winning the FIA GT1 World Team Championship was an amazing achievement and a really great feeling for the entire AMG Customer Sports outfit.
The Australian GT Championship has been so tight all the way through 2012, and I cant see Surfers Paradise being any different to that.
I have watched many of the old IndyCar races from there and I imagine that taking the SLS AMG GT3 for its first ride around the track is going to be a huge challenge.
With Peter Hackett and the Erebus Motorsport teams experience on the Gold Coast, I am sure we will be able to arrive at a great setup very quickly.
Having spoken to the AMG Customer Sports guys, along with Maro Engel everybody has spoken highly about the Erebus Motorsport team.
Maros performance at the last round in the SLS AMG GT3 has really put the pressure on me to maintain that run! Erebus Motorsports results this season speak for themselves and Ill be doing my best to ensure that continues.
For me, this year has been very busy, not only racing in the GT1 World Championship, but also working with the AMG Customer Sports teams and the AMG Driving Academy, so heading to Surfers Paradise will be a great way to round out my year. I have several friends also racing on the Gold Coast, so I will be watching them very closely when Im not behind the wheel.
The beaches of the Gold Coast and Queensland are known very well in Germany - so I will be looking to get some sun and relaxation as well as getting the job done for Erebus Motorsport.
Peter Hackett - #63 Erebus Motorsport SLS AMG GT3:Once again it will be a real honour to have one of the professional drivers from the AMG Customer Sports Team join our team on the Gold Coast, especially Thomas after recently being crowned FIA GT1 World Team Champion.
He is renowned as one of the leading GT3 pilots in the world and to have himthe test and development driver of the SLS AMG GT3 - as part of Erebus Motorsport will be amazing - especially on the Gold Coast, which is a completely blank sheet for all of the Australian GT Championship teams.
Having Maro with us at Phillip Island led to a huge step forward right across the board, especially in my personal development with the SLS AMG GT3. With Thomas experience as a foundation AMG Customer Sports driver, I predict well take an even bigger progression on the Gold Coast.
We increased our Championship lead at Phillip Island, but I think Surfers Paradise is going to be tougher. If we can maintain our position and head into the final round of the Championship in Sydney in the lead, it will be exactly what were looking for.
