TRACK SET FOR UPCOMING SUPERSTARS SERIES ROUND ON OCTOBER 27, 28
Passion, history and tradition are some very significant values in beautiful Sicily and over the years, these values have been represented by auto racing in its most fascinating form. During the golden age of racing, legends like Tazio Nuvolari, Achille Varzi, Stirling Moss, all competed in the region for fame, victory and glory.
The legend of motorsports will be back as a brilliant reality in Sicily with the running of the SUPERSTARS INTERNATIONAL SERIES, the state of the art in closed-wheel competition, as the championship will bring back on-track the some great champions of modern racing.
Pergusa is a pretty fast circuit, featuring long straights and tricky chicanes that make it also quite technical. From the 50's onward, Pergusa welcomed many Formula 1, Formula 2 and Formula 3000 races. Some of the best drivers of any era added their name to the "Gran Premio del Mediterraneo" roll of honour including Regazzoni, Surtees, Siffert, Stewart, Rindt, Laffite, Rosberg, Arnoux, Stohr, Boutsen. In addition to them, an incredibly warm crowd have always been filling the circuit's grandstands to cheer for their favourite stars.
It's safe to say that SUPERSTARS was the only top series missing but the void will be filled on the 27th and 28th of October. Pergusa will be in full glory for the major international event of the season.
I proudly announced to my staff, the motorsports insiders and all the Sicilian fans that international racing will be back at Pergusa - told Tullio Lauria, President of Consorzio Ente Autodromo di Pergusa - all personnel deserved it as we put all our passion and dedication at the service of this circuit. The Sicilian people also deserved it. They were cut out of the top motorsports panorama for too long. This circuit deserved it too as it's been the pride and joy of all our fellow citizens. Thanks to SUPERSTARS, Pergusa will be back to the international racing scene, a deserved achievement".
Some of the best drivers in business will be back running at Pergusa. Gianni Morbidelli, now lined-up by Audi Sport Italia, scored a memorable victory in the venue's 1990 Formula 3000 race before moving his way to Formula 1. Another prime challenger will be fellow Audi man Johan Kristoffersson, currently leading in both the International and the Italian standings (the Italian championship will be at its final race in Sicily). Tonio Liuzzi is trailing him by 10 points with a Mercedes C63 AMG prepared by CAAL Racing (the works-supported team of Mercedes-AMG) while more power is set to come from BMW's ace Thomas Biagi, campaigning a BMW M3 for Team BMW Dinamic. Another world-level star will be Christian Fittipaldi, returning with Swiss Team aboard a Maserati Quattroporte racer - and returning to Pergusa after his F.3000 run in 1991.
More stars are set to join the GTSPRINT INTERNATIONAL SERIES at Pergusa for the final run of an exciting 2012 season. Andrea Palma won the overall honours with two events still to spare aboard the Black Team Ferrari 458 Italia, although he had to fend off the attacks of arch-rival Glauco Solieri on the Autorlando Porsche 997 GTS2. In GTS3, The battle is still open between Ferrari's Mario Cordoni, running for Ombra Racing, and the RC Motorsport duo of Roberto Benedetti and Roberto Del Castello on a Corvette while Colombian Steven Goldstein (Porsche) and the Bocellari-Delli Guanti duo (Ferrari) will be challenging each other for The GTS Cup Trophy.
The SUPERSTARS Sunday will kick-off at 9:50 AM with the running of GTSPRINT Race 1, followed by the first run of SUPERSTARS at 11:15. GTSPRINT will be back on-track at 14:50 while Race 2 of SUPERSTARS will provide the weekend with a spectacular closure at 16:15.
