February 6th 2013For the first time in many years, a major tarmac rally will return to the South East of England with the inaugural London Rally For Heroes taking place on April 19th / 20th.The event will be run and organised by Southern Car Club, and its supportive friends in the world of motorsport, and will be based at the historic Brooklands Museum in Surrey. As the name of the event suggests, the aim is to raise as much money as possible for Help for Heroes. Competitors and cars competing on the rally will be sponsored by friends and colleagues for every mile they complete on the event to generate funds for this worthy cause. The rally, which will commence with a ceremonial start at Brooklands on the Friday, is designed to accommodate spectators and fans, allowing them to get close up to the crews and cars. The competition begins in earnest on Saturday with over 50 stage miles on military roads, in and around the Aldershot area before visiting Mercedes Benz World for two Spectator Stages in the late afternoon- the Ceremonial finish will then be back at BrooklandsSupport for both the event and the idea has been overwhelming, with the Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Hammond, who is MP for Runnymede and Weybridge stating I am delighted that the MOD will be able to support the London Rally for Heroes in 2013. The MODs estate accounts for 1% of the entire landmass of the UK, and provides a perfect environment for a dynamic and exhilarating event like rally-driving. Brooklands, in my constituency, has been home to both British motor sport, and some of the great names in aviation, including Hawker, Sopwith and Vickers. Its links to both motor-sport and Defence make it a perfect starting point for what promises to be a superb event in support of Help for Heroes.Equally excited and supportive was Sir Gerald Howarth, MP for Aldershot who said, I am delighted to hear of this exciting initiative, said Sir Gerald. Aldershot is becoming synonymous with military motorsport and this event would be a great one for the spring calendar as well as a chance to raise money for an excellent cause.Regulations for the event will be available on www.londonrally.net from Wednesday 6th February.
