Building on the great success of last years Historic Festival 30, where Sir Stirling Moss was a such a huge attraction and where a sensational group of the cars he had driven during his stellar career made on-track appearances, 2013s Historic Festival 31 (Aug. 30 - Sept. 2) promises to be even more special.This year the emphasis will be on famous cars and events rather than one great driver.Lime Rock Park will celebrate the anniversaries of Aston Martin, now 100 years old, with a group of 100 Aston Martins; the Porsche 911, introduced some 50 years ago; and a reunion of the Cunningham marque and race team founded by Briggs Cunningham.Cunningham was an extraordinary American sportsman, who not only achieved notable success at the great endurance races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Rheims 12 Hour, in cars built by his company and driven by himself and his friends, but also won the Americas Cup, the most famous yachting event, helming Columbia. An unparalleled display of Cunningham cars will assemble at Lime Rock on the Labor Day Weekend, and will be joined by a group of the cars which Cunningham entered after he had ceased to manufacture his own automobiles.Among that collection here at Lime Rock are the three Corvettes which formed the Cunningham Team at Le Mans in 1960; these three extraordinarily historic Corvettes will be together for the first time in decades!The Lime Rock Historic Festival comprises three days of racing for authentic vintage and historic automobiles, in 10 groups. There are races for cars built before 1939, including some of the great and powerful cars driven by heroes like Tazio Nuvolari and Richard Seaman, Smith told us. Younger cars will compete in a series of races for single-seaters; sports racing cars including Ferraris, Maseratis and Jaguars: and production cars from MGs and Corvettes to Austin Healeys. This year, the Ken Epsman-led Trans-Am carsthe real cars from 1966 to 1972visit the East Coast from their home in California.Mustangs, Firebirds, Camaros, and even the famous lime-green Dodge Challengerraced by Lime Rock's own Sam Poseywill all be here: all authentic, real historic cars, not built-up specials masquerading as the real thing.Friday of the Labor Day weekend will see all 10 race groups300+ vintage racers -- practice and qualify, the grids being set for the Saturday and Monday feature races. Sunday, September 1, is the prestigious Sunday in the Park concours: Some 230 cars comprising the Lime Rock Concours d'Elegance are arranged on Sam Posey Straight, judged by eminent experts, by class, on the basis of design, rarity, provenance and condition.The remaining mile or so of track, from Big Bend to the Downhill, is completely filled with some 750 additional collector cars, displayed by enthusiastic owners in groups according to marque and origin. This Gathering of the Marques part of the concours is a fascinating, eclectic display, where you can get right up close to everything brought by the clubs, from the Citroen Deux Chevaux folks to the 300SL Gullwing Group.Of course, during the Sunday in the Park Concours and Gathering of the Marques, the Historic Festivals race paddock is open and free to all fans, a unique opportunity to get close to the competing race cars and to converse with their enthusiastic owners. The Midway above the paddock will include specialist displays of accessories, bookstores, clothing, and an array of outlets for motoring memorabilia, from posters and models to rally plates and photographs. And while all these activities are in full swing, Lime Rock's famous Automotive Flea Market will be active from morning 'till night in B Paddock... where an enthusiast canfrind rare items, from a 30s Alfa Romeo side lamp glass to a an Operating Manual for a Tatra or DKW of the immediate post-war era.All in all, the Lime Rock Historic Festival is a superlative motoring gathering rendered even more special by its location in Connecticuts famous Northwest Corner. Rolling hills frame the track ,and the roads in the area are scenic and traffic free. The opening event of the Festival, a short Road Rally sees a large group of really interesting cars, many of which will be competing at the weekend, proceeding in convoy from Lime Rock to the Falls Village Inn in the lovely village of that name and taking advantage of those splendid driving roads.The Lime Rock Historic Festival has built a reputation unmatched on the East Coast for great cars, fair competition, and heroic drivers.
