Bill Auberlen takes third win of season with Long Beach victory

Bill Auberlen drove to his 89th race victory on Saturday, charging from the back of the field to take the GT class win in the American Le Mans Series race in Long Beach, Calif., just 15 minutes from his home in Redondo Beach, Calif. Building on four previous podium finishes on the streets of Long Beach, Auberlen notched his first home-track win with a strong drive in the No. 55 BMW Team RLL BMW Z4 GTE.Auberlen's co-driver, Maxime Martin of Brussels, Belgium, started the two-hour race from fourth on the GT grid. A spin on the second lap dropped him behind the rest of the class, but the BMW crew adroitly changed strategy and used several long caution periods to get back into contention. Auberlen took over at the 25-minute mark with a full fuel tank and new Michelin tires. He pitted twice for fuel only, enabling him to methodically work through the field to take the class lead with 14 minutes to go. He led a BMW Team RLL one-two finish with a margin of victory of 6.578 seconds. The win was Auberlen's third of the 2013 season, following a double victory in Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge races at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, on March 2."What a day! Unbelievable!" he exclaimed. "We came here a little behind speedwise, but the car was a pleasure to drive. We picked a different tire from the other teams, hoping it would do what it did, and all of a sudden the competition fell off and we stayed right on target the whole race. Maxime had a little mistake going into turn one, went straight and it put him to dead last. It forced us into a totally different strategy and that strategy put us to the front and we never looked back."Finally, my first win in Long Beach! It's fantastic. I've been all over that victory podium, seconds and thirds, and never had a win. Coming off the double win at COTA and now getting a win in my hometown in front of my family and friends, it's really a fantastic day."performanceBill Auberlen has driven BMW cars in more races than any other driver in the world. He has won six professional auto-racing championships, four with BMW power. He has competed in 483 professional races to date, 327 in BMWs. His results include 89 race victories, 185 podium finishes, 56 pole positions, 81 fastest race laps and 108 records.
