Caught on camera, Formula Ford joins YouTube

New deal with Drift Innovation puts an HD camera on every carDrivers and championship officials to benefit from the sophisticated eyes on the grid

A Formula Ford spins at 130mph broadside across the track and a pursuing car has to take swift avoiding action. Its the sort of hair-raising scenario which competitors face every weekend - and now the armchair enthusiast can experience the same thrills thanks to the fitment of Drift Innovations sophisticated Drift HD Ghost cameras to all cars competing in the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain.

The Drift HD Ghost came into its own at the Thruxton rounds of the championship in early May. Rookie racer Sam Brabham got out of shape at Goodwood bend, spinning broadside into the path of Andy Richardsons car. In a split second, Richardson jinks left on to the infield and avoids what could have been a massive pile-up.

It was all captured on his Drift HD Ghost camera and Andy was able to upload the scary sequence to YouTube. You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMtFu553ffQ&feature=youtu.be

But the new cameras are not just there to keep YouTube surfers amused: they are a vital tool for the young competitors, who can study their laps to try to spot where they can improve their lines, to championship organisers, who can use the footage to investigate accidents and complaints about driving standards, and also to the championships host broadcaster, ITV, which can use dramatic in-car sequences in its Motorsport UK highlights show.

The Drift camera scores over its rivals in a number of areas, says championship manager Sam Roach, of RacingLine: The Drift HD Ghost is not only small and light but its a beautifully aerodynamic shape, perfect to fit on top of a Formula Ford roll hoop. Unlike some other cameras it has a built-in viewfinder, so you can accurately line it up, a rotatable lens, so you can choose the sort of shot you want, a start/stop remote control and, best of all, its wireless and you can view the footage on your iPhone or Android device. The Drift HD Ghost has already proved itself as a vital tool for drivers and for the championship, and we are delighted to be partnering with the company.

Robin Parker, founder of Drift Innovation said: "The partnership with Formula Ford is a great opportunity to showcase the best features of the Drift HD Ghost cameras. It was a relationship developed through Nigel Mihell at S.M.I.N.T and was one that provides a great opportunity to put the Drift HD Ghost to test in one of the most challenging environments in motorsport. We are really pleased and proud to be associated with the Formula Ford series for 2013 and look forward to some fantastic racing."
