Following a five week break from competition, the 2013 Renault UK Clio Cup will resume at Oulton Park Island Circuit next weekend, 8th/9th June, where Masters Cup points leader Simon Belcher aims to build on his current four point advantage at the top of the class standings.
Taking his first two Masters victories of the year last time out at his home venue, Thruxton, the reigning Masters Cup Champion is confident his second season in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship support category has turned a corner after a challenging start to the campaign.
Its been good to have a break since Thruxton to recharge the batteries a bit, but I cant wait to be back in the car at Oulton, said the Swindon racer, We definitely need to build on the two class wins, and Im sure we can, but my main aim is to try and break into the overall top 10. We know were capable of doing that, our pace at Thruxton showed it was possible.
Despite his season getting off to a luckless start during the opening round at Brands Hatch, when contact from a rival punted his KRCHER and No Fear Energy-supported car into retirement mere yards from the start, Belcher has since taken five top-two Masters Cup finishes.
His pair of class wins last time out perfectly capped off the Handy Motorsport with Pyro drivers most competitive weekend of 2013 so far. Only missing out on the overall top 10 in qualifying by a fraction, he went on to post a brace of very strong 13th place results in the combined classification.
It could have been even better too, had he not been forced to avoid a spinning car on the opening lap of the first race and faced with a battle back through the order. In the second of the Thruxton encounters he diced wheel-to-wheel with the likes of three-time Renault UK Clio Cup Champion Paul Rivett and fellow front-runner Alex Morgan, action hed like to be part of again at Oulton Park.
I learnt a lot from the battles at Thruxton with Paul and Alex, it was great racing and very fair too which is how it should be, reflected Belcher, That should stand us in good stead for Oulton, its a circuit I went well at last year and Im determined to keep our fresh momentum going.
During the corresponding fixture last year at the Cheshire track in his maiden Clio Cup season, the former Legends Cars Championship racer claimed what is still his best outright finish in his 2.0-litre Clioeighth position.
Following practice on Friday, 7th June, qualifying for rounds seven and eight of the Renault UK Clio Cup will take place at 11.00 on Saturday, 8th June, with the first race of the weekend beginning at 16.30. On Sunday, 9th June, round eight will commence at approximately 15.15 and will be screened live on ITV4, in High Definition on ITV4 HD and streamed online at www.itv.com/btcc
