MSA reminds motor sport of volunteers importance

The Motor Sports Association (MSA) has once again expressed its support for British motor sports exceptional army of volunteers and has called on everyone involved in the sport to recognise the extraordinary value these people provide at motor sport events throughout the year.At the start of the year, the MSA designated 2013 as the Year of the Volunteer, but Sunday's accident at the Canadian Grand Prix serves as a poignant reminder of the invaluable service provided by volunteers.Later this month at the start of National Motorsport Week, no fewer than 1,168 volunteers will descend on Silverstone to play their part in the British Grand Prix in a variety of roles such as course marshals, incident marshals, spectator marshals, medical personnel and rescue crews. All are highly trained and form part of the 10,000-strong British motor sport marshalling community that keeps the UKs 5,000 motor sport events and 750 clubs going year-round.In order to raise awareness of the important roles of the volunteers, the MSAs social media campaign #ThanksMarshal encourages participants to say thank you to the people that are the power behind British motor sport. The MSA sends its condolences to the family and friends of the Canadian marshal as well as our ASN colleagues over there, says MSA Chief Executive Nick Bunting. While we are constantly grateful for the fantastic work of the volunteer marshals and officials, it does no harm to remind ourselves just to make that extra effort once in a while. Volunteers genuinely are the power behind motor sport and without them the sport simply wouldnt be able to run.As part of National Motorsport Week (June 29-July 7), the MSA is holding a free event at Silverstone to encourage new participants into the sport. Go Motorsport Live! will showcase how easy it can be to get involved in motor sport at club level, including as a volunteer official.
