Second Win Of Season Earns Rowland Formula Renault 2.0 Points Lead
British racer Oliver Rowland surged to the top of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 championship standings at Moscow Raceway in Russia on Sunday, 23rd June, after racing to hisand Manor MP Motorsportssecond victory of the 2013 season.Beginning the weekend fourth in the title race, albeit just 12 points shy of the series lead, Rowland took his third podium of the year in round five on Saturday, 22nd June, with second place but went one better in round six to open a six point lead over Frenchman Pierre Gasly. His win was by no means easy, first having to battle through from third on the grid and then forced to defend hard from Esteban Ocon all the way to the chequered flag. Rowlands brilliant victory also enabled Manor MP Motorsport to climb from fifth into second in the teams championship. Its been a fantastic weekend for Oli and for the team, were absolutely delighted with our second win of the year and to leave Russia leading the drivers championship is a great feeling, said Manor MP Motorsports Sarah Shaw, Its still very tight at the top, and theres a long way to go, so we just need to maintain our focus and keep delivering these strong performances.Beginning round six from third on the grid, Rowland was able to grab the lead shortly after the start when Gasly and Ocon ran wide at Turn One and the Briton had the opportunity to dive through into first place. An attempt by Gasly to slam the door shut didnt work in his favour and he ended his race on the spot with damage, leading to a brief Safety Car period. After the re-start, Rowland held onto the lead and soaked up big pressure from Ocon to secure a thoroughly deserved win and take the fastest lap.Rowlands fastest lap from the opening race, however, remained the quickest of the weekend and was also a new Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 circuit record for Moscow Racewayhis time a lap of 1m32.545 seconds (152.9 km/h). Rowland ran in second place from lights-to-flag in Saturdays race.Team-mate Javier Merlo, who took a season-best 14th place finish in round five after qualifying a best yet 16th on the grid, wasnt able to repeat the same heroics in race two on Sunday and had to be satisfied with 27th position.Beginning the second encounter in 19th place, the Argentine driver dropped to 28th at mid-distance following a moment but ending the outing in 27th place. His showing in round five was certainly the highlight for Merlo, climbing into 15th position on lap seven and then moving into 14th on lap 10.Manor MP Motorsports third car this weekend was filled by rising British youngster Jack Aitken who, on his first outing in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, delivered a strong performance to finish close to the top 20 in race one.Qualifying 25th quickest on his debut in the category, Aitken raced solidly into 23rd position and was as high as 22nd but got shuffled back by local Russian racer Egor Orudzhev. In round six on Sunday, an enforced pit-stop on lap one to replace a punctured right-rear tyre meant Aitken had to settle for 31st place, a lap down.We were really pleased with Javiers performance on Saturday, he raced really strongly and showed his pace is improving well, added Shaw, It was great working with Jack for the first time and he is definitely a quick young driver, he just needs more experience at this level like Javier does. Overall, it has been a strong weekend for the team.Red Bull Ring in Austria will host rounds seven and eight of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 season over the weekend 20th/21st July.Provisional 2013 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Standings (after Rd6):1st Oliver Rowland, 84pts; Javier Merlo & Jack AitkenNo ScoreProvisional 2013 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Team Standings (after Rd6):2nd Manor MP Motorsport, 84pts
