Nurburgring Post GP3 Race 2 Quotes

McKee, Sims and Yelloly discuss their race

GP3 Series: Congratulations, your first win in GP3. Tell us about the start and how the race happened from your view?Melville McKee: It was a tough race, I knew if I could be at the front at the start and build a gap, I could be quick. That was our plan and thats what we did. I didnt want to take too much out of the tyres at the beginning but then I didnt know how much the others drivers were pushing either. It was a bit hard to manage. I had a good lead but then Sims passed Yelloly and began catching me a little as my tyres began to drop off at the midway point of the race. I kept my cool and just kept letting the laps tick down, managing the tyres as best as I could. I had a problem with the rear tyres in the last few laps when Sims was catching me. I think if hed a lap more he may have got me. I managed to keep him behind me yesterday and luckily I did the same today.GP3 Series: How nerve-wracking were the final few laps, knowing it could potentially be your first win?Melville: Yes it was a bit nerve-wracking but at the same time exciting. I knew from yesterday where he was strong and where I was suffering, so I tried to manage the situation with him and the tyres. Im very happy I brought the car home first today. This track is one of my favourites as whenever I race here, I have a great result.GP3 Series: Coming into your rookie year, what were your expectations, did you think you could pocket wins?Melville: Yes weve shown weve had pace all season but luck hasnt been on our side. I think this is the turning point. I have been aiming for wins and we still need to improve our pace on Saturdays but if we can do what we did this weekend, next time and for the future rounds Ill be very happy.GP3 Series: How much do you think this will motivate the team? Not only your first win, but a debut win for Bamboo Engineering?Melville: It feels amazing to get the first for the team. They deserve it as theyve worked so hard. Lewis Williamson has helped me a lot with his experience too and it was a good result for him too today. I think this has lifted everyones spirits. I think we can carry this form on now."GP3 Series: Congratulations Alex, P2 today on your one-off return, how was your race after starting from pole?Alexander Sims: Its a bit frustrating after staring P1 not to win. Theres not point going over the start as I lost a few places there. I didnt quite nail the start but after that it was pretty good. The car was strong and I didnt have as much tyre degradation as the other guys so I could keep pushing. It was really nice to come back and work with the Status Grand Prix team and get a podium for them, the car is pretty decent. I hope this result will help them for the rest of the season.GP3 Series: Do you think this result can spur on the whole team showing what can be achieved and of course improve motivation within the squad?Alexander: By no means do I drive the car perfectly, but it gives them some direction to work with. Hopefully they can build on this for the rest of the season and their results can pick-up.GP3 Series: What do you think of the new GP3/13 car compared to the previous generation car?Alexander: I like it a lot. Its really nice to drive. Its a hell of step-up. Theres much more power and youre able to run more down-force with this car. The new brakes are nice. Its just a little bit of a shame that in the first race yesterday it was quite processional, as there wasnt so much tyre degradation compared to today.GP3 Series: Do you think if the race lasted a few laps longer you couldve taken the win?Alexander: Melville was starting to struggle with his car whereas I still felt fairly comfortable with mine. Id like to think if wed had two more laps I couldve had him. It was good fun and a nice race.GP3 Series: Another podium for you Nick, talk us through Race 2 for you?Nick Yelloly: Starting fourth, moving forward a place and finishing on the podium I guess is quite a good result. I got into second and thought I should look after my tyres a bit. When Alexander was coming, I was struggling, so I didnt make it too difficult for him as I thought if he chased down McKee, they could battle and I could catch them and still have a chance to win. That was my plan but unfortunately it didnt happen. Third is good, its more points and moves us up in the championship. If we class this as a bad weekend, I hope to have more bad weekends like this.GP3 Series: The tyres degraded much more today, what do you think were the issues yesterday as to why we didnt see as much overtaking>Nick: I dont think you get a massive tow around here anyway, that maybe doesnt help. The tyre deg wasnt as high here, Im not sure why they degraded more today though. But I think todays race was much more exciting for everyone and thats how it should be.GP3 Series: What do you think yourself and Carlin need to improve on, as you are just on the fringes of taking victory?Nick: Exactly, well sort it out. Carlin are a great team, theres no doubt about that. Its just making the right step. Now we have a few weeks break to analyse everything and come back in Hungary strong. We just need to start winning and getting podiums in Race 1 as thats where the big points are.GP3 Series: It was a British one-two-three-four today, how do you feel being part of one of many British drivers being successful this year?Nick: Its awesome, I think there was five of us in the top 10. It shows how good British motorsport is and things like Team UK which Im apart of is bringing these young drivers up and nurturing them through. Its great to see the Brits doing so well.Iowa)."
