Nurburgring Post GP2 Sprint Race Quotes

Lancaster, Calado and Leimer discuss their race

GP2 Series: Jon, another Sprint Race win. This is a fantastic result for you. How was this one compared to last ewkks in Silverstone?Jon Lancaster: More difficult by a long way! When youve got Calado behind in an ART car you know its going to be coming fast. You have to have full concentration you know. Make no mistake. I stayed focused. The car was really good and I was consistent. I had a little bit left for every time he got close to one second. I could manage the gap, but its a long way to do on one set of tyres and I had to manage them all the way. Im really happy. We just need to do the same in a long race.GP2 Series: You were on new Mediums today correct?Jon: Yes. Yesterday we were already really good on the tyres on the Super Soft. We managed to pit later than some people on Medium. So the car is really good looking after the tyres. I understands them quite well I think now. We just need to understand better how to get a great car for qualifying. I made a mistake this week in qualifying. It was my fault why we were P16. The car was quick enough you know. You could see on the data I could have been just as fast if not faster than Robin so The car is good. We just need to put it at the front in the beginning and hopefully well do a similar thing in Race 1. It would be nice!GP2 Series: You took the lead at the start and then got a bit of a breathing room with Dillmann holding up the rest of the pack behind you. After the Safety car period, you could never really pull away.Jon: Before the safety car, I could see Dillmann was holding up everybody. I put a good laps in because I knew I needed a gap. I was four seconds ahead I think. I decided to back off and save the tyres. After the safety car I was really disappointed. And after one lap, Calado was behind me! You know he was going to be fast. Hes had a good weekend and a good race yesterday. I just had to stay focused. They told me on the radio that he was one second faster than me. So I built another small gap to him. The gap remained more or less the same. We were both saving the tyres as much as we could You cant just push! You have to really think about it. You have to really be quite mature I think about what youre doing.--GP2 Series: James, another podium finish for you. P2 today. How was your race?James Calado: I made a fantastic start and gained some positions. Its been really consistent so far. Im really happy about that> I had a fantastic fight with Tom Dillmann. Hes a class driver and it was one of the toughest opponent to get past so far in my career! I managed to get past him after the safety car. And I pushed really hard to get the fastest lap and I think I got that by quite a margin and I held back a little bit to save the tyres like we always usually do. I tried to catch up with Jon. I did gain some time on him but we were just too even. Unless he had made a mistake, it was impossible to make a move. He didnt make a mistake so top job for him as well.GP2 Series: Do you think if you had managed to overtake Tom a bit earlier in the race, youd have had the opportunity to get a bit closer to Jon and make a move?James: Its true. If I had passed Tom earlier, it would have been a different story, but that was not the case and the only opportunity I had was the one I took so Im really, really happy.GP2 Series: Youre now back into the title race. Looking ahead to Budapest, what is your objective there?James: Obviously, we need to carry and take this vibe into the team that we have into Budapest and from these two races we have some good data. Budapest suits our car normally. I was P2 last year. Hopefully I can go one better and start on the front row in order to make it a bit easier for myself because Im happy to do a good start every time, but it would be nice to have just a clean and controlled race. I suppose thats the objective and to just keep pushing the team. We need to get this car right for qualifying because I think our priority at the moment is to get on the front row. Weve made some changes for the race which I believe has helped us for qualifying. I think I have a good idea of what Id like and how Id like the car to be set up. I just hope it works. Im confident now that it will and we just have so much more grip this weekend. I was controlling the car. I was not a passenger anymore. Now I got full control and thats what Ive been needing--GP2 Series: Fabio, P3 today. A welcome return to the podium. That must feel quite nice right?Fabio Leimer: I have been out of it since Bahrain. The last few races were really tough and disappointing. This weekend we did a good job. We were a little bit slow yesterday but I the end I could save the fourth place in the last corner which was really nice. Actually today was a really hard race because I had to start on yesterdays prime. We never thought that we could finish on the podium! But at the end I was managing the tyres really well. And the car was really consistent. Im really happy about this third place.GP2 Series: You had a great start and then you found a way to overtake Dillmann as he was losing a position to CaladoFabio: I saw that Calado and Dillmann were fighting a lot and for me actually I knew I had to wait because when I start to fight too immediately my tyres were going to degrade faster. So for me it was important that I could stay close so that when Calado tried to overtake I could take advantage of the move! At the end it worked even better than I thought: I was actually going to the inside and he had a really bad exit. I could overtake him without losing time and using too much the tyres. Then he was holding off people behind me. I was pulling away a bit and then I was saving the tyres. In the last two laps I was starting to get some problems and I settled for third which is great.GP2 Series: This third place puts you back in the title race as wellFabio: Yeah because I would say I lost many points in Monaco and Barcelona. In Monaco I was at the front but unfortunately, I had a crash. Coletti was taking a lot of points there. But finally now in Silverstone I was getting a bit closer to Coletti and again here. We are now in the middle of the season. Everything is possible. We know that in the second half of the season we are really quick so  we push for the next races and I hope that I can finish first at the end of the seaon.
