With just two race meetings remaining in the 2013 Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge, category race winner Oli Basey-Fisher is focused on claiming a top three series finish off the back of securing the Vice-Champions title in the one-off European Ginetta GT5 Challenge.During the fifth event of the season at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium just over a week ago, Friday, 12th July, and Saturday, 13th July, the Great Finborough teenager took the eighth and ninth podiums of his maiden season in the GT5 Challenge to move into fourth place in the driver standings. So impressive was his overall performance across the weekend on his Spa debut, during which competitors from the Swedish Ginetta GT5 series raced alongside their British championship counterparts, Oli claimed the runner-up spot in the inaugural European Ginetta GT5 Challenge. Its absolutely fantastic to have become European Vice-Champion, reflected the Suffolk racer, It was an amazing weekend at Spa, the Academy Motorsport guys did a great job with the car and to have taken two podiums on my first ever visit was as much as we could have hoped for. It really has given me a major boost for the last two events of the year now at Brands Hatch and Donington.Qualifying on the second row of the grid for race one at Spa, round 13 of the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge, Oli launched away well and during a relatively straightforward encounter he was able to climb through from fourth into second place. Taking third on the first lap, the Suffolk One College student then passed points leader Brad Bailey on the third tour for second place.Beginning round 14 from an improved third on the grid, Oli unfortunately slipped to seventh position on the opening lap but mounted a tremendous recovery drive to claw his way back through into the podium placings. Just shading Bailey for second position by 0.3 seconds at the flag, the result marked Olis ninth podium of 2013.During the final Spa outing, the Century Logistics-backed youngster posted a highly competitive fourth place result despite an engine problem which did hamper his charge. Running in second spot early on, Oli was elbowed back to fourth by lap four due to the power issues but still managed to remain within 0.9 seconds of a podium hat-trick to cap a superb weekend.
It would have obviously been fantastic to make it three podiums from three races at Spa, without the engine issues wed have done it, said Oli, It was really important to take away as many points as we could though, were now within six points of the championship top three so its all to play for with six races still to go in the season. Its been a great year so far, I cant wait now for Brands.Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit in Kent will host rounds 16, 17 and 18 of the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge on 10th/11th August. The championship finale, on 5th/6th October, will take place at Donington Park in Leicestershire.Provisional 2013 Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge Driver Standings (after Rd15):4th Oli Basey-Fisher, 318pts
