THE SERIES WILL BE BACK UNDERWAY ON AUGUST 31st, SEPTEMBER 1st AT DONINGTON PARK (UK)
With almost 10 days to go before round 6 of the SUPERSTARS INTERNATIONAL SERIES at Donington Park, the championship is expecting an hard-fought battle between its top characters and newcomers. After five rounds out of eight in 2013, four drivers representing three different manufacturers are covered by just 34 points in standings and they will be back in the hunt for a spot in the sun at the British venue. Thomas Biagi, driving a Mercedes C63 AMG racecar for Mercedes-AMG Romeo Ferraris, has managed to retain his early lead while fighting, between others, with the second works-supported C63 of Vitantonio Liuzzi.
On the other hand, Gianni Morbidelli on an Audi Sport Italia-run Audi RS5 experienced a stellar winning streak and recovered up to the 2nd place, working hard with his team in the development and fine-tuning of his German machine. Morbidelli is now trailing Biagi by three points (143 for Biagi, 140 for him) while Liuzzi is third with 22 points. In addition to them, Giovanni Berton on a BMW M3 prepared by Team BMW Dinamic has made it into the championship fight in-style by scoring two wins at Brno and Slovakia Ring. While in the last couple of round his car was less suited than the rival ones, the team is working hard to challenge for wins again at Donington. The top-5 in standings is rounded out by Luigi Ferrara, with the lone Mercedes C63 AMG Coupé fielded by R.R.T. in one of the most dynamic pairings of the season so far although often stopped by bad luck while on the verge of victory.
More interest in an highly-positive first stint of the season came from the return of two Porsche Panamera S racecars fielded by Petri Corse for Fabrizio Giovanardi and former F.1 runner Nicola Larini. Then, several guest start left their mark like happened with Christian Klien at Brno, Laurens Vanthoor at Zolder and Filipe Albuquerque at Portimao. A priceless new addition will be joining the grid in the UK, star touring car driver Colin Turkington.
More teams have delivered good performances so far this season: CAAL Racing enjoyed remarkable runs so far with Andrea Bacci currently sixth in standings and Raffaele Giammaria cruising to the podium at Zolder. More fascination comes from Francesco Sini and his Chevrolet Camaro and from the two Jaguar XFR racers, one of them with popular comics character "Diabolik" behind the wheel.
SUPERSTARS INTERNATIONAL SERIES (top 5): 1. Biagi 143; 2. Morbidelli 140; 3. Liuzzi 122; 4. Berton 109; 5. Ferrara 90.
