Al Harthy Aiming To Extend Unbroken British GT Points Run

Zandvoort in The Netherlands will welcome the Avon Tyres British GT Championship this coming weekend, 7th/8th September, where Ahmad Al Harthy has his sights set on helping the Oman Air Motorbase team continue its unbroken 2013 points-scoring record. As the category’s sole race meeting away from British shores in mainland Europe, the upcoming visit to the historic Dutch track is set to be a real highlight of the season with two one-hour encounters in prospect for the packed British GT grid.Going into the penultimate race meeting of the season, rounds eight and nine, Omani star Ahmad and his British team-mate Michael Caine hold fifth position in the championship standings and are determined to climb back up towards the coveted top three.Having scored in each of the seven British GT races so far contested, including a memorable victory at Snetterton 300 Circuit in East Anglia back in June, the Oman Air Motorbase pairing has proven its quality – particularly when bearing in mind the significant weight-penalty which the No.1 Porsche 997 GT3R has to carry.“It really has been a great season so far in British GT”, said Ahmad, “We’ve had to fight hard all year against the extra weight we have to carry in the car, but even with that we’ve managed to score in every round which is a fantastic achievement.“All of the guys at the team have been working so hard to make sure the Porsche runs like clockwork and it has all season. Even though qualifying is always a compromise for us, in the races our pace is consistently strong and I’m sure that’ll be the case at Zandvoort. I’m looking forward to racing there for the first time, it’s a track with a lot of history and provides a real challenge which is what I enjoy.”Having celebrated his 32nd birthday this past weekend, a belated gift of more British GT silverware would be warmly welcomed by the Oman Air, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs, Oman Ministry of Tourism, Nawras, National Bank of Oman and Muscat Eye Laser Center supported racer.“To have already won a race in my first season in endurance racing is really more than we ever truly expected, so we know we have the pace to achieve podiums”, added Ahmad, “It’d be fantastic to take away another trophy next weekend, we’ll be pushing as hard as ever to make it happen.”Following two free practice sessions on Friday, 6th September, Avon Tyres British GT Championship qualifying will follow at approximately 09.25 (local time) on Saturday, 7th September, with the first race of the weekend scheduled to begin at 16.00 (local time). On Sunday, 8th September, race two will commence at 12.00 (local time).Provisional 2013 Avon Tyres British GT Championship Standings (after Rd7):=5th Ahmad Al Harthy/Michael Caine, 70ptsProvisional 2013 Avon Tyres British GT Championship Team Standings (after Rd7):6th Oman Air Motorbase, 73pts
