Four Races To Go As Belcher Edges Closer To Masters Title

Handy Motorsport with Pyro’s Simon Belcher knows a pair of strong performances at Rockingham next weekend, 14th/15th September, will go a long way to helping secure his second Masters Cup title in as many seasons, as the Renault UK Clio Cup returns to action for the penultimate event of 2013.With just four races remaining, two at the Northamptonshire venue a week from now and two more at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit next month, the championship is at a crucial stage and Belcher is determined to add to his tally of 10 class podiums during rounds 13 and 14 of the campaign.Going into the Rockingham races, the Swindon 39-year-old holds a healthy 24 point advantage at the top of the Masters Cup standings. Significantly, when the category’s ‘drop score’ rule is applied, each driver having to subtract their lowest score of the season from final totals, his lead almost doubles to 44 points. All told it’s been another highly consistent year for the reigning Masters champion and even though the season began with an unfortunate non-finish in the opening round, caused by a startline tangle not of his making, Belcher hit back with second in class in round two.Adding two more runner-up spots at Donington Park, the KÄRCHER and No Fear Energy-supported driver then claimed a double Masters victory at Thruxton before bagging a brace of second position finishes at Oulton Park. Although his run of podiums came to an end in the second Croft race in June, normal service was resumed at Snetterton last time out with two more runner-up spots.“It’s been a strong year for us, the races have generally been much better than qualifying and we’ve managed to keep consistently racking up big points each weekend”, said the Wiltshire driver, “I’m really looking forward to Rockingham, with only four more races to go it’s getting to crunch-time and we have to make sure we stay out of trouble and pick up the points we need next weekend.“Ideally, I want to go out there and try and take some more Masters wins before the end of the season but the priority is trying to retain the title and that’s where my focus is. Qualifying is where we have been missing out, if we’re able to get into the top half dozen on the grid overall then I’m confident our race pace is good enough to fight for our first outright top 10 of the season as well.”During the corresponding fixture last year, in his maiden season in the Renault UK Clio Cup, Belcher did indeed finish in the overall top 10 during both Rockingham encounters so hopes are rightly high of a potential season-best run next weekend.Following pre-event testing on Friday, 13th September, qualifying for rounds 13 and 14 will take place at 10.50 on Saturday, 14th September, with the opening race of the weekend beginning at 16.20. Race two, which will be screened live on ITV4 and ITV4 HD with the addition of live streaming at www.itv.com/btcc , is scheduled to start at around 14.40 on Sunday, 15th September,Provisional 2013 Renault UK Clio Cup ‘Masters Cup’ Standings (after Rd12):1st Simon Belcher, 307ptsProvisional 2013 Renault UK Clio Cup Driver Standings (after Rd12):18th Simon Belcher, 61pts
