MSA British Drag Racing Championship

Round 5: FIA European Finals, Santa Pod Raceway, 4-7 September

A record-setting, incident-packed race saw Mattias Wulcan secure victory in a dramatic final-round match, which had promised to be the weekend’s quickest but turned out the slowest.

Wulcan and his opponent, Marc Meihuizen, both struck tyre-shake at the start; Meihuizen sideswiped the wall and veered back across the centre line, earning disqualification as Wulcan trickled across the finish at just 84mph.

During qualifying, track records were set by Michael Gullqvist (5.893sec) and Tero Laukkanen, clocking Britain’s first 250mph Pro Mod pass in his turbocharged Ford Mustang. Andy Robinson delighted the home crowd with his first excursion into the five-second zone to qualify second, before red-lighting to defeat in the semi-final. Nine drivers achieved personal-best performance figures during the event.
