Morris is Porsche champion with Pirelli

Pete Morris is the winner of the Baylis & Harding Porsche Club Championship with Pirelli for 2014 after he claimed two more victories at last weekend’s Festival of Porsche event at Brands Hatch in Kent.

The Strasse 996 C2 driver, who until last weekend had not finished outside the top three all season, has won two class titles in the past but never the overall championship.

In Class Two, Stuart Ings and Mark Koeberle ended the season tied on points after dropped scores, leaving series officials to work out the winner based on the number of class victories. In the end the prize went to Koeberle.

Poleman Morris won the first of three races at Brands having fought back after being passed by Tom Bradshaw (996 C2) and Mark Sumpter (964 C2) at the start. In race two the champion was again passed at the start before a spin dropped him down the order and he climbed back to sixth. Morris charged through from that position in race three to win ahead of Mark McAleer (996 C2) and race two victor Sumpter.

In Class Two, Ings (Boxster 2.7) overcame a driveshaft failure in race one to win the following two contests, with Koeberle (968 CS) scoring two second places and a third. Andy Toon (968 CS) was the Class Two victor in race one.Q&A: Pete Morris
The new Porsche Club champion on his title win

How does it feel to finally be the overall Porsche Club champion?

“I’m over the moon, what can I say? I’ve been trying to win this championship for long enough! I knew I needed two first places today, and it was a bit unnerving when I had the issues in race two and finished off the podium for the first time.”

What has it been like competing this weekend?

“It’s been a lot of effort and hard work. I have won the class twice but never taken the overall title before, but if you are going to win a title then winning from sixth on the grid isn’t bad. I kept the tyres cool for the first 10 minutes then pushed on.”

And how would you describe your season overall?

“It’s been a great year in a great championship. EMC have built me a great engine – it just sings to me in the car – and Strasse have done me proud looking after the car.”
