Hat-trick for Wheldon in Pirelli-supported GT Cup

Rob Wheldon made it three wins from three starts when when the Pirelli-supported GT Cup Championship headed to Donington Park in the East Midlands.

Driving a Radical RXC on Pirelli tyres, the GTO class runner, who was on pole for all three races, beat Iain Dockerill/Ben Baker (Porsche 967 RSR) in race one before getting the better of McLaren MP4-12C GT3 driver Jim Geddie in race two. And Wheldon made it a GT Cup triple when he outgunned Geddie for a second time.

Will Plant took his Porsche 997 to GTB honours in all three races with Peter Jennings, John Seale and Jamie Stanley securing a win apiece in GTC in their Pirelli-shod machines. The GTA class wins went to Colin Broster/Marcus Clutton, Ben Tompkins and Clutton, who drove solo in the final race of the weekend.

Among the notable drivers competing at Donington were former A1 GP champion Adam Carroll, Le Mans racer Rob Bell and Pistonheads journalist Dale Lomas, the latter pair giving the McLaren 650S Sprint its world racing debut. They were sixth in race one, with Bell achiving the same result driving solo in race three.

The Pirelli-supported GT Cup Championship season finale is at Oulton Park in Cheshire on October 25.
