Tiago Monteiro secures well deserved WTCC podium in Shanghai

Tiago Monteiro achieved what he set out to do, avenge the recent races in Beijing by rising through the field in the second race of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, WTCC, in Shanghai this weekend to finish on the second step of the podium, a well-deserved result after last weekend's disappointment.

The layout of Shanghai with its long straights was less suited to the Honda Civic and in the first race Tiago endured a few difficulties and finished in seventh place overall. Therefore the Honda driver decided to go on the attack early in race two, determined to secure a place on the podium.

As a result, the Portuguese racer equaled his best result of the season, second, and this very positive outcome to the weekend also cemented his fourth in the Championship, the best of the Honda drivers and the best non-Citroen. "Despite getting a good start in the first race, it was complicated and I had many battles with our opponents. Try as I may, it was impossible to keep them behind me so I just focused on getting some points for the championship," he explained.

In race two, another good start and strong progress were the key to Tiago's success. "The start was very hard with many battles for higher positions, but then I focused on my race and gained an advantage over the drivers behind me. I still tried to get as close as I could to the win, but there wasn't enough time. Second place was excellent considering that this circuit is not favorable to our car. After what happened in Beijing, this result is great for me and the team."

The next race takes place in Japan on the 25th and 26th of October.
