Following the Festival-opening Race Car Parade & Falls Village Street Fair, it was time to get down to business on the track. Starting at 10 a.m., each of the nine race groups had two qualifying sessions. Don’t let anyone tell you vintage racing is “slow” – three groups had drivers hustling their cars around in less than a minute per lap...
Group 3, Formula Ford & Formula Junior (Dave Porter on pole with a :58.323 in his 1971 Lotus 69); Group 7, the big iron grid of Vettes, Mustangs, Jags and 911s (Jim Hamblin’s 1968 Porsche 911 on pole with a :58.837); and Group 9, a “formula libre” collection of post-1970 open-wheelers and sports racers (Howard Katz and his 1975 Toj SR put in a :52.027 for pole).
Stirling Moss and Jochen Mass, this year’s Honored Guests, went overtime in their autograph session, while earlier in the day, Moss and Lady Susie got into the 1914 Mercedes Grand Prix car, and Mass hot-lapped the brilliant 1939 Mercedes W154 Silver Arrow Grand Prix car. (Mass last raced here in 1986, during the 1986 IMSA GTP season.)
Saturday there are 18 races, a jam-packed Midway, multiple autograph sessions and book-signings and, of course, all the special Mercedes and Honored Collector displays.
Gates open at 7:00 a.m., races start at 9:00. Come on out.
