Porsche Club Title Goes Down to the Wire

The Fuel Protect Porsche Club Championship with Pirelli season comes to a close this weekend at Croft in North Yorkshire with the title still up for grabs and ample points on offer. Reigning champion Pete Morris looked to have the title in his grasp but an off in race one at Oulton Park two weeks ago dented his hopes and let the chasing pack close in.

Morris has claimed five wins in his Strasse 996 C2, but it was his consistent run of podium finishes that was seeing him pile up the points, and when he could only claim fifth in the second race at Oulton in his repaired car then the door was open for his rivals. Twelve races into the season and dropped scores now come into play, and on pure points scored so far Morris has a lead of 29-points over Class Two pacesetter Jonathan Evans, with Tim Speed just three points further back – but the situation will evolve over todays two-races as drivers drop their worst scores.

The wins in Class One have been shared round with Craig Wilkins taking three, Mark McAleer winning at Brands Hatch at the start of the season and Oulton Park throwing up a brace of first-time winners in Mike Johnson and Kevin Harrison. The 996 has been the dominant car in the class with but Chris Dyer has shown the pace of the Cayman S – his most recent podium at Oulton coming from a fine drive through on a wet track

Evans has had a strong challenge in the latter half of the season from the similar Boxster S of Steve Cheetham, who has won four of the last six races. They haven’t had it all the their own way at the head of the class however, Tim Speed leading the challenge from the front-engined cars in his 968CS and coming on strong in the latter half of the races. Croft favourite David Botterill has been another class contender in his venerable 964 C2, and the class battle should be as fierce as that for overall honours in the two 25-minute races.

Qualifying is at 09.50 on Saturday, with races at 14.00 and 16.40.
